We had our Yorkshire Terrier castrated two month ago -- he is old (7 years) but had it done as his testicles never descended and they were becoming a cancer risk.

Since then, he has been constantly asking for food and incredibly playful.

Painfully playful -- will look for anything around the house to grab, show you and then rip to shreds if you won't / can't play. We have never bothered about measuring food intake, he comes and finds us if he is hungry, we feed him and then he stops. But now he will eat and eat and constantly whines for food.

Is this normal? Any suggestions?

Thanks

I don't know whether it would be related to the castration but I think I would be having him checked out at the vets (incl blood tests) as behaviour changes and increased appetite can be indicative of issues such as thyroid conditions (eg hyperthyroidism).

Keep us updated.

Dogs get hypothyroidism. Signs include poor skin, weight gain severe lethargy and reduced appetite. Not likely to be this but never wrong to check him over if worried.

However increase in appetite could be a result of the neutering (hormones changing) playfulness may also be hormone related and may well get more settled in a few weeks. Not a bad thing necessarily better than getting lazy as they can do smile
