When I say 'best' I mean what is the best carpet to have in a house that a cat won't destroy!!

Despite having scratch posts and scratch mats galore, our cat loves to scratch on the bottom step of the stairs and is making the carpet threadbare.

I think we currently have loop pile as when the cat has finished there are strands of carpet about half an inch long which he's pulled out. Would a cut pile be better, my thinking being he has less to get hold of?

As it's the stairs and therefore gets a lot of wear would a sisel type carpet be better or would the cat have an even better time on this!!!

Thanks.

I recently put this question to our local independent carpet stockist. Even he wouldn't commit to something which would stand up to moggie.

We recently changed some of our carpets for one from a brand called Invictus. It was recommended to us as being relatively cat-safe and so far no issues. The rope commonly used on the scratching posts that you get in the likes of Pets at Home etc. tends to be Sisel and I guess you'll have seen the sort of state that ends up in...

I forget exactly which of the Invictus range it was that we got but it is fairly deep and plush and is also "bleach safe" - we've never tried to (or had to) use actual bleach to clean it yet but hairballs etc. tend to clean out of it fine with normal Vanish carpet cleaner foam.

Our older cat used to like lying at the bottom of the stairs and clawing the hell out of the old carpet, come to think of it I don't recall him having done it since we put this stuff down...

If it's only in the one particular area have you tried covering it with a carpet offcut or just a floor scratch pad? or would be just move to another area?

Mad idea, if re carpeting, keep that old bit of carpet as it will be scented and use that as the scratch pad?
