Hello Everyone

We are looking for a friend for Toby the Chihuahua after Jays passing. We think Jay was a whippet/Labrador and they got on famously.

Since Jays passing Toby has not been the same I think growing up with Jay and him having lots of Chi buddies he is struggling on his own and is getting depressed.

We have been looking after another Chihuahua Teddy and Toby has started being himself again. Teddy has had to go back home and Toby has reverted to being depressed.

So, her in doors has always wanted a Dachshund, it was a toss up between getting a Chi and a Dach when we got Toby. I'm not sold on a Dach with their hound instincts and their back issues.

So what about a puppy Whippet? (we want a more outdoorsy dog like Jay was) Will they get on together or will the Whippet chase and attack Toby?

Also are we best getting a female or a male Whippet?

I'd like to offer something constructive, but I think it will be dependent on each individual dog, how they react with each other.

My girl whippet is trustworthy around small dogs and cats, my boy whippet is not really trustworthy. He can play a bit rough with other dogs, and because he speeds around them, if he makes contact with the other dog, they tend to get rolled over.

I would guess that a girl whippet puppy growing up with your other dog would be ok, but they can play a bit rough when they are young. From about 18mths old she had calmed down and is now relatively placid.

also keep a close eye on him as they grieve just as much as us but cant tell us, our friend had to get another companion quite quickly as her dog that was left when his playmate passed away just gave up. back to his old self once the carefully chosen new arrival entered the house!! good luck with a new playmate.

Our whippets just ignore any chihuahuas they see, but as posted above it depends on the individual dog. Whippets like a bit of tumble play with their own kind but in my experience are incredibly placid (and mainly asleep).

I actually have a Whippet and a Chihuahua. They get on like a house on fire. Both are males, the Whippet is more playful being only 18 months now and the Chihuahua is more of a lazy bones. Let me warn you I have had the Whippet since he was 8 weeks old and it was hard hard. Such a loving dog though and very soft.

I'd agree with this - I haven't had many puppies (my very first dog was 6 months, my latest is 5 months and Sam and Jet whippets were 8 months when we adopted them). Sam and Jet were far more 'full on' than Max is. I've heard it said that whippets never really grow up/calm down. Sam and Jet are 5 now and are calmer now than they were, but can still be hard work.

Our ex-racing Greyhound (a rescue) has zero prey drive and is best friends with a foxy, despite being trained to chase fast moving things of that size.

It really comes down to the individual dog.

A friend has 3 whippets. 2 are great around small dogs. 1 isn't. And they have all been owned from puppies.

Whippets are such lazy sods though. They only move if the think there's a meal at the end of it, then it's off like lightning.
