This chap is being fostered by my neighbour, he's 4-5 yrs old and has come from a very unsympathetic home. He had a urinary infection and the owners wanted him put down. Vet persuaded them to hand him over and he's now on the mend. He's super affectionate and really well mannered.

Trouble is he weighs 8.1kg which is hindering him washing properly and is clearly not good for his overall health. Being a foster cat he can't go outside so an indoor exercise regime is now in place along with a strictly controlled diet (he's quite happy with this and never "asks" for food). Any other tips to help get his weight down?

Can you not use a harness and lead and walk him outside? I have done that to my cats when we move house before letting them out on the loose. Or chase round the house with the Hoover biggrin

Healthy diet, regular exercise and let the weight fall off naturally. Don't rush it. House cats can be exercised with plenty of play. One of mine stays indoors but loves to chase a thick piece of string - the type that's used as handles for bags that come from posh shops, like this kind of thing ...

I have loads of bag string. Tie both sides together.

We foster for Cats Protection, we have two cats in now as the owner passed away. One is 10Kg and the others 9Kg. both are very friendly, the larger one looks like its melted onto the floor when it lays down frown

we've just go them on diet food and they get the string flung around to get the moving several times a day.

Bloody hell fire, I thought this one was big! Once he's shed the weight he's going to be very agile as he's jumping about already. A 17lb cat makes quite a noise when crashing about mind.

I can only imagine. My two sounded like a herd of Elephants even when they were only a few months old!
