I started last spring by putting saddlebags on my Rottweiler. He responded really well and seemed to enjoy it but the warm weather put a stop to it.

I just started again before coming away and he loves it. He is more focuses, responds to the lead with less effort and seems to enjoy carrying it. It also means he can carry water for himself, snacks for me etc. There is also the added benefit of giving him better exercise in a shorter space of time which is needed when I'm away.

He's 50ish kilos, is in great shape but had read on how some working dogs see a backpack as a job. He has maybe 3 kilos of weight in which I don't expect to raise unless we need to carry more.

Does anyone else do this, it's been a really positive experience for us.

Yes, my two malamutes have them. Amongst other things I use them to carry the weekly shop back from the supermarket. However they are best for great for bothie trips in the highlands, can load them up and away they go.

Depending on your dog, you can increase the weight carried to about 20-25% of his body weight.

I would be happy if I could get a bag pack for my dog so he could carry his own turds back to the bin instead of me walking about with a thin plastic bag full of warm dog st.

I use a Julius K9 powerharness and saddlebags for Storm.

It's expensive, but the saddlebags are fully waterproof and the harness is probably the best I've come across.

I'll need to do longer walks to the shops so he can carry some bits back for me.

I'm trying to do longer more intense walks with him so we will both no doubt need a half time meal.

Do you guys see a change in attitude or focus when they have the harness on?

I don't think it's a dog you need, rather a mule.

Saddlebags for dogs.....
