the OH and i are cat people, we both have had cats in the past and wanted a pair of kittens from a rescue home.

Problem is we are in a 3rd floor flat - i'm not sure on peoples opinions of keeping cats indoors but our theory was that having a loving home (and another cat to play with) surely is better than being in a cage at a rescue home?

anyone got any experiences of the above ?

No ideally they should be outside hunting mice and small birds certainly not in a flat.

Not sure if I'm whooshing, but that's why the songbird population is in massive decline.

Controversial but I believe there should be a charge on cat ownership to be used to boost wild crops to promote songbirds across the country.

But then this references the RSPB info and states that there has actually been no research in the UK, but cats do also affect other factors to reproduction.

But hey, no action will be taken and our countryside is only getting smaller, so many more factors involved.

Nothing wrong in cats in a flat, especially if two of them and plenty to occupy them. Some charities are more open to it than others. I would look into adults from a rescue that may already be used to indoor life over kittens though.

I have had several cats over the years. Two accepted life as indoor or outdoor cats depending on where I was living at the time. Another of my cats only ever stepped outside if me or my hubby were outside and would run indoors as soon as we went in! Our 4th cat of the group used to like being out all the time, but she got hit by a car!! She survived and did go out again but no where near like she did before and now spends 95% of her days inside even though the door is often open and we have a cat flap.

Certain breeds don't suit eg Bengals in a flat not so good. Ragdolls, largish breed but seem quite content as indoor cats.

I say go for it. Living in a well thought out home has to be better than a rescue cattery!

An example of a charity that is prepared to consider indoor rehoming of adult cats http://www.bristolandwalescatrescue.com/indoorcats... (my friend has just taken on a couple of cats from them, I've had quite a lot of dealings with them over the years, they have a good and reasonable attitude to rehoming compared to some charities)

Those responsible for the decline in songbirds are (1) humans cutting down countryside for housing; and (2) larger birds like magpies. Cats are someway down the list.
