Our new lucky pup

What a start to life our new puppy has had! Welcome Otto the Mini Schnauzer picked him up Friday 2nd sept
Within a day we were noticing that he was straining to go to the toilet which progressed over 48 hours to screaming in pain! He was also so lethargic and not very puppy like no life or play in him.
Took him to the vets who, once they had enough pain relief in him, examined him and said that his anus and colon felt abnormal with no stretchiness and an x-ray revealed his intestines were backed up and filled with poo!
The vet said that she would check with a soft tissue specialist but thought nothing could be done and we should be prepared to say goodbye we were devastated! While waiting for the specialists at The Royal Veterinary College they put him on a course of pain relief and enemas.
The following day the specialists at RVC asked to see him so i drove him to the hospital there.
On arrival they took all the details but couldn't do an examination due to the pain so although they suspected a stricture they couldn't tell where it was or if operable. The course of action was to put him under a general and do an endoscopy and if possible balloon the stricture. We agreed that if it was found to be in an inoperable location then he should not be woken up - again devastated!
Later that day got the best phone call i could wish for they found the stricture and successfully ballooned it and they would now monitor him for a couple of days - we spent all the time we could visiting him so he'd know we hadn't abandoned him.
I can't praise or thank the RVC enough. Yesterday our pup came home and hes transformed! now a happy, fun loving, playful puppy. We're so happy but what a rollercoater of emotions! Still need to monitor him over the next few days and revisit the vets at the end of the week just to check him over.
sorry for the long post but its been quite cathartic writing it down.

Having picked up our mini Schnauzer last Saturday, and being worried over the weekend over his eating and toileting issues, I can't imagine what you have been going through with yours, so glad they managed to retrieve the situation and you now have hopefully a long long time with these wonderful little dog's.

I'm so glad it turned out well, what a nightmare!
But can I ask, where did you get him from and had they not noticed anything was wrong? Presumably it wasn't something he was born with?
This is a very good point, the breeder should have been aware that your puppy was having trouble. But can I ask, where did you get him from and had they not noticed anything was wrong? Presumably it wasn't something he was born with?
Hi no the breeder didn't notice as he was fine when we first saw him and on collection. He went downhill quite quickly afterwards.
All the vets have said that it wouldn't have been noticeable whilst on mothers milk as its such a low waste food and the usual vet check wouldn't routinely include a rectal exam.
So once weaned the issues would have started but he wouldn't have showed any outward signs of pain until we got to the point where we were a couple of days after we picked him up.

Oh I am soooo glad the little fella is ok Miniature Schnauzers make great companions and even after the slightly rough start to his life he should bring you years of happiness
Just be ware of small holes and any large gaps as if he has the same tendency as my Lottie, he may want to go down/jump things like that!
Would also suggest grooming quite a lot (god that sounds bad!) but they need lots of brushing, start young and get him into someone who knows how to cut Mini's coats, but he is a lovely Pepper and Salt as well
Ok, think we need to start a Miniature Schnauzer thread
