I'm not really familiar with pet owning, no one at home full time etc, so after some help please.

Next door have had a dog since a puppy. Still only perhaps 12/15 months old now. Some sort of cross but medium size, think Lab/Retriever but not quite as stocky as a Lab. Anyway, the problem I have with it is it's incessant barking. It's like chinese water torture.

We have large gardens so he runs around a fair bit then sits/lies down and will woof.......woof.......woof......woof with a break of perhaps 5 seconds between each. I've finally had enough of it and snapped whilst trying to study the other evening; went round and had a word with the neighbours. Since then all has been quiet, so they must be keeping it indoors.

So any ideas, is this likely just a dog thing, bad training, boredom. TBH I'm asking as although it is annoying I don't mind the odd disturbance, just when it's hours on end.(or seems like it)

Well a lot can depend on the dog. It may be barking because it is excited, bored, playing, guarding............ Even barking back at other dogs....

It's been out today and no barking, so i think they must be paying it some attention. Will see how it goes for the next few weeks.

If the owner has any sense then they will sort it otherwise the owner could find the police at his door handing out an ASBO.

I wouldn't have reported them, but I know another neighbour who expressed their frustration. Since I've been round the dog has barked about 15 seconds. Whatever they have done has sorted the issue so all is well at the moment.

we've just moved into a house where the neighbours have two small dogs and one of them just does not shut up! It can even be inside and hear me coming out of my side door and boom off it goes, it can be outside and hear the blo**dy ice cream van, it barks. The other younger one doesn't really do it which is bizzare but will get involved sometimes if it feels like it. I think they're moving out soon which is lucky but they're so protective over anything it's really annoying they should of been trained better as a pup IMHO

Op, I don't know if you like dogs or not but have you said 'hello' do the dog. It may diffuse the situation with your neighbours and could settle the dog a bit?

Yes I have. The barking tends to be when the dog is alone. I can forgive barking when we walk down our drive (saying hello/checking his territory) or when I have the lawnmower out (noise).

Sounds like the dog has separation anxiety. Not the easiest thing to solve, but it sounds like the owner is making progress.

My dog barks at a fly, but remained silent when someone was vandalizing my Honda Civic Type R two years ago biggrin
