Well since the loss of Flint our Border Collie to epilepsy nearly a month ago, we are now looking at puppies. The other half really wanted a Shepherd, but after a chat with our vet it was not going to be suitable for our needs (canicross and agility).
We have therefore decided on a Pointer or a Vizsla (dog not bh).
Next weekend we are looking at a Pointer X (all pointers just different types) and we are also waiting to hear from a breeder local to us about a German Shorthaired Pointer.
We are not worried if it is full pedigree or has KC papers etc, just want a dog that suits us. Just worried that we will not be drawn to the dogs as the loss is still a bit raw and he will have one hell of a pair of boots to fill, however our Springer does seem to need a companion and it will be good for her to have one that she can boss about but can can still protect her.

Do you want a bigger dog? We have a border terrier and stocky working cocker ( springer size ans colour but kc) and if anything kicks off the bt is between the wc and any other dog. He beats her up, but out and about , she's the boss and sticks up for him.

Also they make a good agile blend to run round the corners not needing acres to exercise ( we have just under an acre that they run round chasing each other all day)

However, I should say, she always backs off due to loads of training unlike some bt.

Mike

Ps apologise but am wc and bt fan but looking at a rescue springer to join the pack

Pps both come with me on shoots. Wc retrieves, bt sits at heel and barks at birds.

Edit to add, I'd love an English pointer

Our Springer was a reject. Perfect size for hunting as she is tiny. Everyone thinks she is a Cocker as she is smaller than most. However she is petrified of dead birds and gun shots in the distance. Since our Collie went she has lost a lot of her confidence.
We are not small dog people and prefer the bigger dogs. Our Collie was quite big for a Collie. He had massive paws when he was a pup. A grown Pointer will probably weight about 10kg more than he did (so approx 35kg for a Pointer). Just hope I never have to carry him down the stairs. It was bad enough with the Collie

We found an advert online for some puppies (well we found lots of adverts) and this one stuck out and was telling us that we had to go get one from there. One of the pups had it's tongue out a little bit whilst sleeping, just like our Collie used to do. We were after a boy and this one was a girl. Bugger. Oh well. we went to see them anyway - 180 miles away. Drove past plenty of turn offs for other adverts we saw as we headed up the M1. We may have been even been able to get a pup from one of the 3 litters less than 10 miles away, but no we drove 180 miles.
In the end it was worth it. The breeder had sent us pictures of all the boys and the markings on the back of one of them looked like a dick. Out of the 4 boys, guess which one the other half liked? Yep....that one. We pick him up in 5 weeks.

Now we just got to think of a name. We have one that we both like, but still trying to find the perfect name.
