We adopted a 2-3 year old lurcher back in February, superb dog in just about every way, but we just cannot persuade him that jumping into the boot of the car is a good idea. Extremely frustrating as you can imagine, especially as once he's actually in he's not bothered about the journey, and the end result is always an awesome walk at the other end.

He has no physical condition that means he can't jump or finds it uncomfortable, he'll happily jump over fences or onto a bench for instance.

We've tried all the suggestions we can find, luring him in with treats, providing a step to make it easier to walk in, taking it slow, not forcing him etc. but this can result in a twenty minute wait. Not ideal. A lot of the time I have to lift him, which means he only goes in the car when I'm around, my wife can't do it.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Front paws lifted up and then lift back end is what we always used to do.

I think ours didnt like jumping into a tight space as no room for run off as it were....

If he travels ok otherwise, so it's not car journeys itself stopping him, can't you just lift him in?

Some dogs just don't like jumping into confined spaces.

Sorry just seen the bit re your wife. As above front paws first then lift in, unless he is a big over 20kg lurcher your wife could probably do that (I have a crappy back but this is doable for me with large dogs)

Maybe a ramp into the back of the car?
