Dog ate a cooked lamb shank bone
Discussion
I know there are various schools of thought about cooked and raw bones, just looking for some specific advice please.
One of the dogs raided a bin bag earlier before I put it in the wheelie bin and nicked a lamb shank bone. She'd got through about half of it before I noticed.
I realise it probably wasn't good for her and will check more carefully in future but do I need to do anything other than keep an eye on her? She's mid-sized, about 20kg, crossbreed.
Thanks.

Our Border Collie somehow got hold of an entire large roast chicken last year. It was sitting at the back of the kitchen counter - he must have jumped right up.
From the time I heard it fall on the floor to the time I got to the kitchen (10 seconds) the entire thing was gone.
He's small for a Border Collie. I have no idea how he got through an entire roast chicken in 10 seconds. Called the emergency vets - they said just keep an eye on him, no need to bring him in unless he's in distress.
Took a few days to work through him - it was pretty messy (and white) coming out, but he was fine.

If she'd had a problem with the bone you'd know about it, trouble happens when they're actually eating it rather than afterwards. Yes keep an eye on her but it's highly unlikely she'll have any ill-affects.One of the dogs raided a bin bag earlier before I put it in the wheelie bin and nicked a lamb shank bone. My GSD got hold of a cooked lamb leg bone & got a lump of it wedged in the back of her jaw, not choking her but needed a trip to the vet to get it removed. The things we have to put up with !

It may get stuck, we see constipated dogs quite often from eating cooked bones. At this stage there's nothing you can do, just keep an eye on the dog and any concerns visit a vet then. May well pass no problems but you can only wait and see.
Thanks. When I first spotted her she was chewing it well - until I got to her I thought she had a stick. I was more concerned that there might be sharp fragments, but will definitely keep an eye on her. She ate normally this evening and she's (as usual) asleep now:CAPP0 said:

CAPPO, I would sleep easy sir. Your fine dog looks like it has an element of GSD in her? Although mine got a bit of bone stuck at the back of her jaw, once they've chewed & swallowed them it's job done. Given it was cooked bone, her system will have no problem digesting it.You said she walked ok afterwards, so no worries chap.

Whatever they might be crossed with, they are beautiful dogs sir! A credit to you, and I'm sure the 'Old Bone Chewer' will be absolutely fine!
For what it's worth, my GSD is the daughter of a Police dog - She's 42 kilos & is the loveliest dog you could imagine.
A lovely dog around children, faithful, obedient & loyal. Not to be messed with though

Couple of interesting things on that point this evening. Firstly, had a knock on the door, after dark (unusual in itself) from a young guy trying to sell something. Didn't get to establish what, as Otis wasn't about to let him anywhere near the threshold or me. He's quite useful for getting rid of unwanted callers! They look at his size and step back and then decide they don't really need a sale! Also just been discussing with a neighbour the fact that 2 eastern european guys tried to steal a dog from a woman out walking today, about 2 miles from us. I believe the dog was a staff or bullie of some sort (don't believe they got away with it). MrsC walks our two on her own regularly, and whilst Otis isn't trained to guard, he does have the instinct quite strongly. Whether he would step in if required, I don't know and don't want to test. I'd like to think so though; I'm not convinced he would attack but he'd probably make a lot of noise.
