Cat flaps and draughts?
Discussion
Hi Guys
We are looking at rehoming a cat and it seems most places are adamant that you have a cat flap.
Just wondered how draughty they tend to be in the colder months of the year? The only suitable door opens right into our open plan living/dining area and I just wondered how much of an impact it's likely to have on room temperatures?
If it helps I'm looking at the Sureflap micro chip flap:

Thanks

Tell the cat to stop flapping - problem solved!
Sorry, seriously though, we have a Sure Flap and there doesn't seem to be an issue. I'm sure it's not quite as warm around the door where the flap is as other areas of the house, but there certainly isn't a draught.

The one we have here doesn't give us any drafts. It's a normal locking one
You can be just as adamant that you will fit one; after they've have arrived and settled in and been kept in for a few weeks.l, as per their recommendation.
We currently have a frantic Fur Mum looking for her rescue, who bolted through their microchip locked cat flap 3 days after his arrival in the house; they hadn't even updated it for his chip!
Our little blind Beauty has managed to open the cat flap here with a few head butts, it is now boarded up with the recycling bins against it.

Many thanks Ali
I'm not averse to getting one installed - in fact it makes a lot of sense with us both working full time - I just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be like the arctic in the winter with essentially a hole in the main door into the living room!
Ours is fine, obviously not airtight but no significant draught.I'm not averse to getting one installed - in fact it makes a lot of sense with us both working full time - I just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be like the arctic in the winter with essentially a hole in the main door into the living room!
Oh it does!
And I'm sure that not all cats can open them when they are locked
After all, Beauty is very clever and with her other senses heightened as a result of her blindness you'd be amazed at what she gets up/in to
And the cat that stormed through the other recently was 1/2 Bengal & a big boy!
It was more a 'don't let them bully you too much'

I must admit to being a little surprised by the attitudes of a couple of people I've spoken to at rehoming centres/shelters this week. Considering I'm offering a warm, loving, safe home to an animal in need you'd think the general attitude would be of kind and helpful but it's not been all like that!

They are most definitely off the charity donation list.
CPL, I'm looking at you.
All too common I'm afraid
CPL were fabulous, didn't even home check me (which considering I was in rented & taking on a blind kitten was VERY shocking!)
RSPCA said no as I lived in a rented flat. Flat out refused to talk to me.
But I've heard bad of both - it's like they dint want them to have a home

We aren't able to take a cat until May 2nd due to two nights away just prior - and were basically refused to even be allowed to see the one we were interested in today. I figured that as we would probably be looking at around 1 week for a home check etc and the I's dotted and T's crossed, that a few more days wait wouldn't be a problem. The impression I got was 'we'll get rid of her before that to someone else'. CPL were fabulous, didn't even home check me (which considering I was in rented & taking on a blind kitten was VERY shocking!)

I can see both sides and can't complain that they want to free up spaces as soon as possible but still left a bit of a bad taste.
Mrs PR went to CPL (just looking mind you) And came home with one. No home checks, follow up or anything.
Puppy from Dogs Trust, very professional, garden check, follow up calls, help with training.
Sorry original question, cat flaps are not drafty, thinking of a dog flap as well.

Interesting. There is no CPL shelter here in Bristol, I enquired and they do a home visit first before then arranging to meet potential animals who are being fostered in peoples homes.Puppy from Dogs Trust, very professional, garden check, follow up calls, help with training.

They're not even following their own rules there.

We have rescued 4 cats from CPL over the years, don't think they've ever followed up.
Think now they Google street view your verified address to see if the area is suitable, eg not near main road etc
We have a standard 4 way locking cat flap into our kitchen/breakfast room & yes, it can be a bit draughty but not horrendous. Worse when the dogs stock their heads out for ages on end!
