Looks like my 13yr old working cocker has eaten something he shouldn't have again.

Had us up at 2.30am on Monday needing to be let out, then out again at 6am. He spent all day in the office with me yesterday going out frequently. Nothing was coming out of him apart from a little bit of liquid occasionally.

Got up this morning to a small amount of brown liquid on the kitchen floor, didn't smell so good.

He has been on eggs or rice since yesterday, not been walked obviously.

From the solid excrement I picked up yesterday it looks like he's had something fabric maybe, OH is adamant he should go the Vet, I'm not sure as we've been here before & the Vet can't do a great deal other than charge me for it!

If he's still blocked tonight then I think the Vet it will be, he doesn't seem to be in pain, not trying to vomit & is moving around fine. My main concern is that if he has eaten something & he doesn't pass it they will have to open him up - not good for him & not good for my wallet frown

Any advice?

Your choice. If you phoned me I would have to say get checked as can't tell over phone or internet how bad it could be.

Usual guide if just diarrhoea and bright and still eating bland food 24hrs and should expect rapid improvement and be on the way to normal toileting by 24hrs later

If vomiting and diarrhoea probably should get seen esp if vomited more than once.

Also if he has eaten something to cause a blockage the longer it is in there the more chance of severe trauma to the guts.

Actually on re reading this I am thinking vet today!! If he is only passing small amounts of liquid that is one of the clear indicators of a blockage (esp if you know he has eaten material aswell and he must not be left til tomorrow. False alarm I hope but I would rather that than risking peritonitis.

I hear what you're saying people.

In the past he has always gone straight to the Vet but if he has eaten something soft it's almost impossible for them to find it without opening him up. If he was vomiting or in pain I'd have taken him already.

I'll call them now.

He's being seen at 6.30, had to persuade them to see him as they are fully booked. Will update later.

Best to play safe, apologies in advance to your wallet!! It is good news that he isn't vomiting but we've been caught out in the past due to atypical presentations. ie you expect vomiting with a fb but they haven't had it

If he has eaten something soft or fabric-like, then opening him up might just save his life. If he hasn't eaten a foreign object then it may be better to play conservative. I wouldn't diagnose my or others dogs over the internet or phone without a "clinical examination".
Hope there's good news later.

Ok, Vet agrees he's probably eaten something & suspects colitis, he's given him a shot & has antibiotics, collecting a pro biotic thing for him tomorrow to try & settle his tummy.

Fingers crossed he'll be returning to normal by the weekend, OH's Westie is at Vet on saturday anyway so if necessary he can be seen again then.

Thanks for all the advice, appreciated.

ETA Also suspect anal gland infection which may be linked, Vet emptied them & said they were particularly foul!

He's looking much happier, Vet thinks it will be the weekend before he starts to pass anything so we'll monitor him for a few days & meanwhile he'll stay on plain foods & no walks.

Our cocker ate a small ornament that caused no end of sickness and would not pass or vomit up. £1800 later he's got a large scar on his belly where it was cut out....

Thankfully everything ours has eaten so far, and that's been lots, has come out eventually. Being un-insured I really don't relish the idea of opening him up, even more so now he's getting on a bit.
