Had a call from my brother tonight, his cat, a neutered tom, keeps entering a neighbours house and attacking their cat.

Collateral damage includes knocking over and smashing their tv, spraying urine around and biting the neighbours cat so badly it has needed intensive treatment at the vets.

Obviously this situation must be resolved asap, does anyone on PH have any advice?

The neighbour should fit a smarter cat door, one that works on magnetic key or rfid chip or something.

Would not stop him, he lurks until a door or window is opened. Neighbour has tried a water pistol with no effect as well.

Correct..... but please don't try to tell me "You cannot keep them inside" etc etc etc.

Its his pet... so its his responsibility. If that was a dog it would have been put down by now.

Agreed. (Well apart from last bit). And I am a cat owner.

The cats owner needs to take responsibility and if that means keeping the cat indoors until a better solution is available then so be it.

The law disagrees with you.

Morally however you are correct and I would also look to keep the cat in for a few weeks. I'd also invest in some of the spray stuff that they don't like and spray it all along the boundary with that house to see if it stops him going that way.

Your brother needs to go round & see his neighbours, take a good bottle of wine and apologise.

He then needs to offer to pay for cleaning the places sprayed and the Vet bill and discover if the TV was covered by household insurance... If it wasn't it is up to him, but I'd be offering to replace the TV too.

His cat then needs to become an indoor cat with lots of toys, and maybe a playmate that it can chase & play with rather than bullying.

Thanks to all who replied, my brother has already apologised and will of course pay for the damage, he is a true gentleman and always does the right thing.

Sadly, the cat has not followed his example so it looks like being confined to quarters is the only course of action, the guilty party is an expert escape artist so it looks like he will have to be caged for a while as rehoming is not an option.

In his own house he is a well behaved cat, an adored family pet, so suggestions involving hot lead or similar will fall on deaf ears.

Your brother's house insurance may cover the damage to next door.

Good grief, this forum is worse than Biker Banter, do people read the thread before they post?

I'd expect a few robust suggestions in other light hearted forums after two or three pages but this is a place for pet lovers, practical advice etc isn't it.

Bro' has paid for the TV, the cleaning, vets charges etc as any reasonable person would and is seeking to resolve the problem.

Sadly I told him that the inmates of PH would come up with an answer pretty sharpish, as they do when asking about a car problem.

Thanks again to those who suggested sensible solutions, I'll post the results as one of my pet hates is an unresolved thread.

As an owner of a bullied cat I would suggest your brother recommends a microchip cat flat for the neighbours, as that at least removes one route of access for his cat if/when it gets out again, and leaves a safe space for their cat.

Unfortunatly some cats seem to be timid whilst others are pure bullies, no matter how loving they are to their owners, and that seems to be impossible to change, as you cant just sit your cat down for a long chat smile

He could fit catzecure fencing to the perimeter of his property so his cat can go outdoor but not leave his property and get into the neighbours.

It really works, I've had it for a year now and I've got 6 cats not one has got passed it and got out.

You are being a bit harsh. Two posters gave ott replies, the rest were perfectly reasonable and offered a solution to the problem you posted about.

And I agree I hate unresolved threads also, especially if I've put a lot of time into them! (obviously not in this case as I would have just repeated what others had already advised!!)
