Just watched the film Hachiko: A dog's tale based on the true story of a Japenese Akita that would wait at the train station every day for his returning master after his sudden death and made me wonder what other true stories of Animal loyalty, bravery etc are out there?

Not so much loyalty or bravery, but this is one of my favourite stories:

Do read Pen Farthing's "One Dog at a Time" - it's a wonderful story.

(OK I'm biased as our dog is one of his Nowzad rescues from Afghanistan, but just scan the comments).

I read this in a newspaper (remember them?), some country column or other called Notes from the Farm, or A Country Diary - either the wail or the graunidad.

Anyway, some towny vets move to the country. They're asked to call in at a farm. When they do they see a female border collie tied up with injuries to her paws. Seems that the farmer has thought it's a good idea to punish the dog for some transgression or other by dragging her behind a tractor for a bit.

The vet/s do the job they came for and offer to take the dog in and patch her up FOC. So they do, and until recuperation the dog sleeps by the fire displays what they said was something like the most beautiful temperament they've seen.

The dog goes back to the farm and I can't remember how long it is until they see her, but at some point in the future, in the small hours they're woken by noise at the front door. When they see what's what, the dog's standing there with a bottle of wine and flowers as a thank you.

Just kidding. It's got a newborn pup in it's mouth. Basically the dog's given birth to a litter somewhere back on the farm and has made the decision to bring them up at the vets.

So basically, during the night she makes a round trip of something like five miles per pup x5 pups if I recall.

Anyway, the dog settles in with her pups, and her routine becomes something like, goes out first thing back to the farm, does her job as a sheepdog, comes back a couple of times through the day to feed the pups, then comes back at night!

Obviously the article I read was more detailed but the gist of it was:

TL/DR:
Dog gets patched up by vets, realises their place is a much better propsect for tea, biscuits and babysitting while she's at work.

The above is regurgitated to the best of my recollection (sure it was in the Gaurdian originally).
