Small pond in the woods where I walk my dogs absolutely crammed full of frogs and spawn, heaving in fact....am I wrong in thinking this is very early to be happening?

Rhetorical Question in the end... quick search tells me it is normal.....as you were.

I saw a frog in my pond a couple of days ago, so they've certainly started congregating.

I just hope it doesn't freeze again........tho whole surface of the pond (about 15ft dia) was rippling with diving frogs when we approached and the masses of spawn which I assume would be lost.

It doesn't get as badly affected as you would imagine, obviously the developmental speed is closely linked to the water temperature so it will just stay more or less dormant until spring really arrives, and the spawn is a bit like an iceberg, so even it it does freeze hard enough to kill the top layer, loads more under the surface will survive, and they'll just have more gloop to eat, so will get off to a better start.
