I don't want to go against the no name and shame rules so....

Our next door neighbour has a dog that barks when anyone walks passed.

Today they went out, I think it was to hospital as there was a ambulance car there when I went to work at 9am, but tonight at 7pm they weren't back home.

The dog was barking and howling. I'd been home for a couple of hours and it had got worse.

Both myself and my wife were getting very concerned about the dog, we are used it barking, it's not a problem ours barks as well!

But we didn't know how long it had been left, did it have any water/food etc.

I called the 'large national animal charity' to ask for advice - their phone system has more options than any I've ever encountered and after I'd finished pressing option 1,2 3,4 .... I still didn't get speak to a real person or get any advice.

I think the phrase is 'not fit for purpose'.

Your thoughts....

.................

The next door neighbour came home at about 7.45 just as I was dialing the local hospital, I'll speak with them tomorrow.

Lucky you didn't call the charity made up of five capital letters. They would have taken it away and at best off loaded it on a small private charity or taken it away and shot it. Horses are their speciality.

There is one large animal charity consisting of five letters that I shall never deal with again.
Case one: wished to adopt a Rottie. Seperation issues so not to be left home alone. I'm self employed, 'great, can attend work with me'
Adoption blocked as 'they don't adopt dogs out to single men in white vans'. Very insulting, and good luck finding a retired person that can handle a 7 stone Rott, or an unemployed one that can afford one. FFS!
Case two: An ex colleague was emigrating, and had taken his two cats there as had run out of time to find them homes. I chose one, yet the ***** wouldn't separate them. Ex colleague spent ages trying to state to them that said two cats hated each other, and he WANTED them going to separate homes, to no avail. Idiots!
Stick to The Dogs Trust IMO. Maybe chat to the neighbour to see if there are any circumstances that you could assist them with the dog. They may be struggling, or appreciate an emergency contact for looking after the dog?

Don't worry I'll be doing that - both myself a my wife were very worried the dog.

Now you mention it - I remember years ago contacting them about a horse and they did nothing.

Why are still in 'business'?

They are the most trigger happy bunch of 'rescuers' you could meet. They turned up at a field in Kent recently where some ponies had been abandoned. There were at least three private rescue groups (including my o/h) who were trying to catch these ponies and get them to safety. The big well funded charity rounded up a number of the ponies, took them away to 'safety' then shot them. While I understand some animals get to a point where they are behond help, the animals that the private groups took have all survived having been given the right vetinary care, diet and living conditions.

Rant over....

Exactly right. A few years ago my sister in Wales managed to get her horse stuck in a dyke after it got spooked. She ended up needing the fire brigade to help get them both out. Somehow the great charity turned up and wanted to film the rescue for their publicity. They had nothing to do with the rescue at all. My sis promptly gave them their marching orders. I'm surprised they didn't just shoot it anyway.

Lots of people have horror stories about a charity made up of capital letters.

IMO, it's good to visit little independent charities.

Yes, I have two of my own. Disappointed is not the word.

Which is why I stopped the donations and redirected to a local independent charity.

Totally agree with this.
Local independents do it purely for the animal(s) in question and not for their own promotion or kudos. From the ones I have seen they are usually run alongside a full time job on a shoe string budget and still destruction is the absolute last resort.
I hear horror stories about the big letters charity every time they are mentioned. All I can say is they must have friends in very high places to not have been closed or at least heavily investigated.

If any of you are interested, we recently got our third pooch from a charity called Balkan Underdogs. They rescue street dogs from the streets of Romania, where dogs are treated dreadfully. The biggest threat to them are wardens who round them up and take them to killing stations, which are exactly what they say. Our adoptee is fantastic, and it seems like he knows how he has landed on his feet - he'd obviously never been in a home before, TV and stairs took him weeks to figure out smile

I agree about the big charity, contacted them on two occasions to receive non-existent interest in suffering animals. I've always thought the Blue Cross one seems good though, does anyone have any experiences?

Yes, although limited. My Dobe/Vizsla came from there (featured recently in another dog pic thread) They seemed knowledgeable on their subject, and had made good in roads with their training of him. Personally I thought they were a good organisation, and would recommend .

That's good to hear as I was thinking of donating as well as getting my mum one of their cats.

Which is exactly what we do after experiences with them.

Took a load of food and new bedding down to a local rescue centre at Christmas.

No.

The only reason I managed to save the cat they "rescued" is because I drove to the vet they left her with and told them I wasn't leaving without the cat that they were putting to sleep that afternoon. She lived with us for another eight years or so.

Oh, this is the cat that when I called them out I said I will take her if no-one wants her. Then I waited with the officer and said "if the owner doesn't collect her within a week I will take her, please call me". Then the next day when I phoned them they said she was at the vets. So I called the vets and said I will take her if the owner does not come forward. And then the next day when I called and they said she was being PTS that afternoon, I got in my car.....

Just to update this:

Spoke to them today, they were very apologetic, the hospital had kept them much longer than the anticipated.
They are out again tonight and obviously taken the dog with them.

Interesting to read that no one has a good word to say about the 'charity'.
