I was reading this thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... and it prompted me it tell the tale of Bandit who was my friend.

18 Years ago on the afternoon of the day I moved in to my current house I picked up two kittens. Brother and sister they could not have been more different, Jet was a stocky black and white young man and Bandit a slight tortishell girl. They had very different personality's Jet was shy and quiet as he grew all he wanted was a sunny spot and a full belly. Bandit on the other hand was a feisty ball of hissing and claws from day one . Into everything and nosey as only a creature with nine lives can be, She fought with all the dogs iv had and won, I had a GSD who she did a good impression of the face hugger from alien on and that dog was a big lad but even he knew who was boss after that and he carried the scars on his nose the rest of his days.

She outlived them all

Since last summer she had lost weight and condition, her balance left her. Until this week she kept her appetite and seemed bright eyed. Purred like a train in your lap and demanded attention. But this weekend her breath started to stink like hades itself and she stopped eating.
In our hearts we knew it was time but we struggled to come to terms with it. We prevaricated on Friday night about if we were doing the right thing. We wanted to give Her one more chance to fight old age and stay with us.
Thankfully we made the right choice and took her to the vets on Saturday, She was in the late stages of kidney failure. So we eased her passing and cried and cried. We cried for our loss of our friend.

As my wife put it of all the ghosts we will carry with us through life she will be the loudest.

It's one of the hardest decisions you have to make - you dread having them put down before their time, but fear keeping them alive with a poor quality of life. Not matter what you do, you'll worry whether you did the right thing.

All you can do is try and make your decision with the best intentions.

Absolutely this. A horrible, horrible decision to make whatever the circumstances. OP, my sympathies. Bandit sounds like she was a real character; cherish the memories.

So sorry to hear of your loss, but I did have to chuckle at the facehugger comment, I can just imagine the scene!

She sounds like she was a real handful at times, and I reckon they make the best pets.

I have never cried as much as when I lost my cat to kidney failure. I held her while the vet put her to sleep. i know where you are coming from.
