Anyone experienced looking after one on PH? Looking at getting one in the coming weeks, potentially from here; http://www.tortoisecentre.co.uk/MoreDetails_20030_...

And also a starter kit from there as well. I'm thinking of one more towards the end of April so it's not hibernating for long/anymore and just starting to do some reading up on them.
They look quite easy to maintain, which is a plus smile

Tortoise
Easy to look after yes, but they are quicker than you think!
You only have to look after them 6 months a year, mine lives on the back lawn in the summer, loves eating daisies and upsetting the cat. And in the winter he lives in a cardboard box under the stairs
One thing to remember they live a long time my Dad bought me mine in 1963 !

My grandparents had one when I was a kid, he was called Timmy smile

They inherited him from a family member who had drilled a hole in his shell near his tail to loop a piece of wool into so he didn't get lost in the garden! Sure he didn't enjoy it very much at the time but it worked! You could always find him.

He just hibernated for 6 months in a box on the utility room, it was a bit weird as a kid!

Great animal to have around, lived for about 35 years I think. One year he went to sleep and just didn't wake up. Grandad would pop in and check on him every few weeks and once he was a bit smelly!!

Have had Dougal for nearly 40 years, he isnt a Spur but a Herman.
They do live for years, can be around 80 if they have a good life, they can hibernate but if you keep them in a Vivarium then they wont.

Tortoises do enjoy being out in the garden, they also like to explore so you need to ensure that its a secure garden, they also like to dig and will bury themselves in if you dont get them in the evening, at least Dougal comes to the back door, if you are not there then he trundles off again!

Easy enough to keep but can suffer from ailments and require a bit of a run around as their claws can become quite long.
