quick question , last week my dog (gordon setter)was diagnosed as diabetic after a urinary tract infection (cause for vet visit)

he has lost 3 kg in a week . dropping from 36kg to 33kg , could this be due to giving insulin to a non diabetic dog.?

just wondering if he has been misdiagnosed ,vet was very quick to say he was diabetic , no weight loss before the insulin injections started..

???

If you are giving insulin and it doesnt need it it will be very very lethargic and possibly go into coma and die.

Diabetes is easy to diagnose.

We had a king Charles Cavalier a few years back, Buster he was a cracker of a dog with a fantastic personality.

He got diagnosed with diabetes so we had to inject with insulin every day, he lost quite a lot of weight and the vet said it was quite normal.

Get your vets to do an in house blood test and this should put your mind at rest, we use in house glucometers that have been calibrated for animals, very quick, also get sample sent for fructosamine and have urine checked. This will absolutely clarify if positive.

Diet should be assessed aswell as can help control insulin levels and reduce weight loss etc.

It is very early days yet so will take time to get controlled if it doesn't settle then they should ck that the diabetes isn't secondary to other problems.

thanks for the info folks

we are at the vets today for a mid day blood test , to plot a curve ?

just thought it unusual for him to have lost so much weight in a week ,

the first vet that treated him didnt think he was diabetic

A true glucose curve is a blood test every 1-2hrs throughout the day to see how the insulin is affecting the glucose levels, a one off midday test isn't a curve and not very reliable but will confirm if glucose is present.

Diabetes very easy to diagnose with sugar in urine when no other cause. weight loss can occur with diabetes while trying to find correct balance of insulin, but diabetes can also resolve when other initiating factors regress.
