One of my children wants a hamster.

We've been to see some at a large pet shop locally and whilst they appear very cute I was extremely concerned to note that they are actually Syrian hamsters.

In light of what has been happening recently, should I be concerned?

My concerns specifically are whether or not the hamsters are in the shop legitimately and whether adequate background checks have been conducted.

Does anyone know how to check whether a hamster has been radicalised?

You are right to be concerned. I'd keep it in a cage if I were you. Might sound harsh but you can't be too careful

Make sure you check its pouches.

Should be ok, they probably don’t even know what’s going on, but to be on the safe side make sure you don’t line their cage with the political pages of the newspaper so they don’t go getting any ideas, and also perhaps cover their cage with a cloth when the News is on. This will also have the benefit of saving them from distress at what may be happening to their parents back home.

This is an upsetting thread, as my hamster has just died in a tragic accident. Fell asleep at the wheel!

My friend had a traditional English hamster, Floyd, for many years and he was brilliant. He passed away last year and in the Autumn she replaced him with a female of unknown origin. The thing is vicious as hell! She actually growls whenever anyone is near the tank. Picking her up consists of wearing full on riot gear with bomb proof gloves.

I was looking here for answers. Interesting.

'Tank'? It's most likely had enough of swimming all the time

We lost out our Syrian hamster this evening. Around 2 1/4 years old. Even as a grown-up, and with the hamster being such a little thing which is only alive for a little time it's sad! We have had four and they have all had really pleasant natures. I think the key thing is to make sure they are regularly and gently handled from a young age.
