Trying to get ahead on this one as do fancy having a real tree again this year but also have visions of the cats utterly destroying it or themselves in the process

Any tips for a newbie cat owner on how to best secure the tree and/or discourage the cats from climbing all over it?

Impossible, unless you can put it somewhere they can't get to. It draws them in like catnip !!
Last two years we have tried to have a tree up, its been on the floor 1st night on both occasions.

Wasn't me !!!!

Half the fun of a tree is watching the cats try to work out how to attack it.......

Ah there seems to be a theme going on here! I had had visions of tying it to the ceiling or something. Hmmm...

We were thinking the same, Indy climbs everything and plays with anything.
A free is a total no go.
Was half tempted by a vinyl one to stick on the wall and a new hooks with decorations on.
(If such a thing even exists)

Loved the idea of the wooden one a chap on PH made a few years ago.
Shame he never to my knowledge put them into production.

With it being the first Christmas in my first (purchased) house I was planning on going pretty full on with the Christmas decs this year, unfortunately KaraK-cat is a rather keen climber and can leap for bloody England. I've been trying to pick up non-fragile decorations because I know I haven't got a hope in hell of stopping her from going for them, it's all about damage limitation for all concerned I think!

Ours aren't too bothered now. When they were younger, they did like to knock the baubles off and chase them round the floor.

And we have had the odd tinsel connected string of sausages in the litter tray.

Can you imagine the cat’s delight, when you set up your Christmas tree? A tree for me for Christmas… aww, thanks…meowwwww! Well there are a few things you can do to cat-proof your tree. First, Put something like orange peels under the tree to make your cat less likely to go near it. (Cats also dislike the smell of rotten apples.) Second, use duct tape! If the tree is shorter than 6 feet, use duct tape to tape the legs of the holder to a piece of wide ply-wood and put the whole thing on a short, sturdy table. This keeps the tree above their level and the cats won’t be as interested. Use a piece of high test fishing line to connect to the top of the tree to the ceiling. This will prevent the tree from tipping if the cat does decide to go for it!

Put the tree in the garden and keep the cats in the house. There is no possibility of having the two in the same space.

I can't find the post, I'll look better later

The Wildlife Heritage Foundation UK @ Maidstone give their big cats Christmas trees every year, they ask for them to be donated after 12th night

There's something in the scent that drives cats crazy; like catnip!

We gave up after a few attempts. Three Bengals. We're still finding mini-baubles (allegedly unbreakable) under and in things years later.
