My lovely pussy cat Jake has decided that in his sleep he wants to drool!

We noticed it for the first time a few days ago and just wrote it off as a one off - the poor thing woke up and didn't know what was going on!

But it has happened a few more times recently. It doesn't happen every time he has a nap, but it has never happened before.

I presume a visit to the vets is in order - I wonder if it's something wrong in his mouth?

Any suggestions as to what could be causing it?

Well, I am going to be a disappointment as I am a bit stumped as to why thus is suddenly happening especially in sleep.

I will have to advise a vet visit but would suggest if you get a chance to try a film him when it occurs.

My battery is about to run out. I will post a few more thoughts in a bit!

Thank you for your comments Elephantstone! Lots of others offer great hel on this forum. I am not so useful in G&G smile

Have you checked the mouth for any inflammation of the gums? Or a missing tooth....

Good things to check for but would expect drooling whilst awake, not asleep.

I'd be more thinking of a muscle issue or problem with salivary gland itself

How old is he out of interest? Mine started to do that when she was getting on a bit......vet checks never found anything and tbh it wasn't really a problem - it didn't seem to get worse or happen more, but it didn't go away either. Just an age thing we reckoned (proven by the fact I'm pretty sure I've started drooling in my sleep!)

The misses was very quick to remind me that I drool in my sleep too hehe however he's only 3 years old so it shouldn't be an ageing thing.

I have had a look at his teeth/gums and all appear ok...however I'm not a vet by any stretch of the imagination - I feel like someone who knows nothing about cars lifting the bonnet to take a look...just because it's the done thing to do smile

He's due his jabs in the next few weeks so we'll bring those forward and have him checked out and see if anything can be seen. We are having some building works done at the moment so it is possible he's decided to nibble on something that isn't particularly cat-friendly.

Oh, and Bex - thank you for your comments - it is always appreciated. It'll be very difficult to film the poor bugger drooling as he usually sleeps curled up in a ball with his head buried under his paws. The poor thing was sleeping next to my while I worked yesterday and woke up at looked at me with the expression of "Moosey, why am I all wet?! confused ".

Aww bless him. It is definitely odd and would concern me a little bit. Plenty of cats drool when awake and it is not a medical issue, some do it as a contentment reaction (my friends cats used to dribble when being fussed....or when seeking attention smile) but to wake up that wet and being young should be looked into.

Let us know how he gets on. Sure there'll be a simple explanation that I haven't thought of!!
