I live in a flat. The people below have a couple of young Chihuahuas. These little tykes make a lot of noise when they're left alone, to the point where they're becoming a pain.

They only make a noise when they're left alone, and their owners are, in all other respects, good neighbours, so I don't want to get heavy and p*ss them off. Are they likely to calm down as they get a bit older, or do I need to act now?

How long and how old?

I would start noting it now wither way in case it doesn't improve but my suspicion is unless the owners know to try and rectify it, it won't settle esp if they are a few months old now.

If they are making a racket when theyre out the owners probably dont know. I'd try and bring it up politely in the "thought you'd like to know" way.. Pretending you are worried they are lonely etc.

Cheers all, will have a quiet word with them.

The elder dog is about a year old I think, the other about 9 months.

I moved house a couple of months ago and next door is a chihuahua that I've named "yappy dog" as it never shuts up and often attempts to throw itself through the fence to get at passers by. It's so bad my neighbour can't take him out for walks as he strains at the lead and tries to attack everything that moves. On meeting the neighbour I said your dog's lively isn't he, and she said he's completely untrainable. Despite this, she loves him, and I've had to buy earplugs. Beats me why anyone wants an untrainable constantly yapping creature. She says it's because he's very protective of her home and so she's not worried about burglars!

Ok I think. I didn't see the owners for a couple of days, so dropped a very carefully worded (i.e. pretty gentle), note through their letterbox.

Instant improvement. 99% of the noise has stopped, just the bit where the little critters go mental when their owners return from work now, and I can cope with that.

Quite possibly. Wish they were all that easy to solve!

I leave the TV on for my Lhasa and they are right noisy little sods! It does distract them from hearing every tiny sound.

I think the main thing is that they don't leave them alone for such long periods. The dogs seem to be OK for a couple of hours, but after that they get very agitated without some company.

Time will tell.
