A friend is off to Singapore for work for 6 months, and we are seriously thinking about looking after his dog for the duration. He says he will either come back after 6 months, or get the dog pet passported if he stays out there and take her with him in 6 months.

If I am the custodian of said hound for 6 months I am a bit concerned about the legal implications. I am going to insist he gets top dog insurance whilst he is away, but what happens if I have to claim on it? I would imagine that only he could claim, which could be tricky. The dog's chip would also be registered to him.

I am thinking I might be better to tell him to transfer ownership to me for the moment, and I can then transfer it back.

Any advice for me?

Have you considered that in 6 months you might not be keen to give him back the dog? Why not just take the dog now and be done with it? Best for the dog too IMHO so it is not messed about.

Also, what breed of dog, it may not be suitable to live in Singapore.

He had her dna tested, level 2 Staffordshire bull terrier, level 3 Dogue d3 Bordeaux, level 3 Newfoundland.

I am seeing the dog today, will have a very long hard think before we agree to anything.

It's not a bad looking dog. However they are not allowed for importation to Singapore, thanks Jasandjules for prompting me to check.

Microchip can have temp (holiday) addresses put on by owner.

Insurance- I'm not sure as usually has to be policy holders signature on a claim form, prob need to discuss with an insurance company.

Vets shbouldn't be an issue as long as owner gives verbal, or preferably, written consent re: you being guardian whilst they are away and ok to sign consent forms etc whilst they are away.

May also be worth getting something written up and signed with witnesses re: the agreement you make on temp/ permanent ownership etc to prevent any problems in the future. May seem ott but best have all scenarios covered

He can also put you on the insurance policy so you would be able to discuss any issues then

Subject to what the dog is like, it could be 6 months of heartache. Does the OP have dogs all ready? That would certainly help.

Yes I have a dog, and 2 cats. The dog chased the cats a bit, it was a bit of a handful and my dog is frail too and I didn't think the 2 dogs were compatible to walk. Also I was very unsure as I was told the dog would either be taken back upon the owner returning after 6 months, or taken aboard and you can't export these dogs to Singapore for certain.

Yes certainly, Dogs Trust had ours DNA tested to determine what breeds were involved as some are genetically predisposed to certain hereditary diseases, as she was already deaf they wanted to do some checking. She came back as half Staff and half English Bull terrier. The test results also highlighted no potential issues with genes associated with heart problems that EBT's can be prone to. Not sure of the cost though, I remember being told it wasn't cheap.
