Hi all,

As posted in "pics of our dogs", I am now the proud owner of an 8 week old cockerpoo called Elvis smile

I would appreciate any pointers on the best insurance scheme for him, any things to be aware of when finding insurance etc,

Thanks in advance,

CTO (and Elvis) smile

Good breeders usually give 6 weeks isnurance anyway, but Petplan are, Im led to believe, the best of the rest.

If your breeder hasn't sorted some temp ins cover you should get 4 weeks free with Petplan from your vet. No obligation but gives you time to look around.

Pet Plan and Agria are the ones to compare to.

Vetsure might be worth a look. Practices need to be aligned with them but it's owned by a vet so it's actually organised very well.

A quick look on their website gives me £99 !! A month !! Admittedly for 2 3 mth old GSD's !!!Do not come with their own Ferrari transport !!

Is it just me or is this rather exorbitant ?

Whose website Petplan? Actually a vet nurse had this with her GSD with Petplan I suggested looking at Agria and it was half her original quote.

Give agria a ring rather than do a web quote, its a free number and you should be able to get a better deal, plus its a lifetime policy that you can tailor make for your new arrival

Hope they have settled in ok

Congratulations OP! We pick up our new pup in 3 weeks.

Vet recommends Petplan, but we've heard a few recommendations for Morethan, Sainsburys & M&S amongst others. Lifetime cover seems to be the way to go, and you shouldn't need to spend more than £15-20/mth. Try one of the usual comparison websites & have a look at Moneysavingexpert for advice.

The vets around here are also pushing their own additional pet plans on top - £12/mth for vaccinations, flea/worm treatments, 6mth health checks & discounted surgery. An unexpected additional expense, but a lot of customers seem to go for them.

More Than, Sainsburys, M&S don't do lifetime cover, they do maximum per condition. Not quite the same but can provide good cover still.

Cost per month will depend on breed and sometimes postcode area. £15/20 may be a bit low for a good policy cover. Could be looking nearer £25/30-40 when taking all aspects into account.

More Than and M&S do offer long-term policies (effectively lifetime cover), as well as maximum per condition. A list of different lifetime policies can be found here.

Never seen one presented which is odd considering the amount of insurance forms I've seen over the yrs!! only ever seen them under max per condition. Do they reinstate this amount every year for on going condition?

That is odd, as they seem to be pretty popular! Maybe their Premier policy isn't as popular as their maximum benefit ones.

Yes they do, as long as you continue to renew with them.

Good to know as I hadn't been aware of them. I have been on maternity for a yr, a lot changes in the veterinary world in a yr smile.
