yesterday morning fishing at some old estate lakes in E Midlands i saw one of these birds flying overhead at very close range
i literally did a 'double take' to see if my eyes were deceiving me
got home and checked the RSPB site and yes it was a little egret - seems they are not as rare as i thought in the UK but it was a first for me
i've been lucky with rare birds - last year had a Rosy Starling in my garden for nearly one week - the other starlings accepted it without any problem
at the same lakes in early March i saw two Ospreys in a week - obviously on their way north
in early June a pair of Honey buzzards were in the adjacent woods - may have nested there?
there are two resident Peregrine Falcons and a few pairs of Mandarin Ducks (i call them chicken ducks as the noise they make is more chicken than duck)
then we have the the 'mob' - a female mallard and four young females - mum befriended me when the ducklings were a few days old - i started feeding them and it got to the point the 'kids' were under my feet whilst mum went to sleep as if saying 'its time you looked after them whilst i have a nap'!
they are now as big as mum - still come to me every morning to be fed - but woe behold any duck/coot/moorhen that comes near - everything gets beaten up - they are real thugs!
i won't give the exact location as twitchers have caused problems over the years
