On my way to work I saw a cat in the middle of the road which had obviously been run over. I stopped and managed to track down the house where the owner lived (only 2 houses on the road). The cat didn't make it but at least the owner was able be with it for a short while before the inevitable. Quite sad really. Never been much of a cat person but it really has upset me seeing someones beloved pet die. All I could say to this person was "Wasn't me and I'm sorry for your loss" as she scooped it up and headed for home.

Don't know how someone could hit a cat and not be bothered to find the owner though when there is only 2 houses. Some heartless people around.

Alwys hard when I see one in the road. Seen a couple get hit and in both cases the cat ran out so late the driver probably didn't see them. One was a Transit tipper so prob didn't feel anything either and the other might have just heard a bump and thought, what was that.

This happened to me. Was driving home one night at about 1am and came across a cat in the road which had been hit with a car. My partner got me to turn round and go back and the cat had a collar which i removed and my partner lifter the cat and put her on the pavment.

I had to phone the poor owner at 1am and wake them.up with the bad news which was hard as i have 4 cats myself and had cats in the past which have been ran over some survived and some have not survived.

The following day the owner text me thanking us for stopping giving her the chance to say good bye. Needless to say after this my cats got extra cuddles and treats

My pure white Persian was hit and killed outside our neighbours, by a bus many years ago.

The bus driver did stop and had a chat to a couple of people out and about, oddly we neither saw or heard anything. He said that in the distance he thought it was a bit paper or plastic bag in the wind, when he realised it was a cat, it was too late.

Anyway one of the neighbours heard a commotion, came out; by this time the bus driver had gone, realised the cat was ours and came and told me.

Fortunately for Fluffy (I didn't name her!) she would have been killed instantly, unfortunately for me, the scene wasn't a pretty one, she is buried in my dads garden.

I've been to loads of reported dead cats/dogs in the road and yeah some of them are pretty horrific. We generally never remove them, just scan them with the chip reader / photograph and leave them were they are, as long as they're not causing any danger. Council bin crews will dispose of them, or nature will.

Not a fun job but at least we've been able to let some of the people know 100% for sure Fido or Tigger aint coming home frown

rolleyes

What about animals that shoot out without being seen. Especially at night, it's bloody hard to spot them.

My cat was hit and killed by someone and left in the road. Thankfully the person whose house she was outside picked her up, checked her collar and kindly wrapped her up in a blanket and brought her home to me.

I was out walking the dog at the time and it was quite a shock to come home and find her on the doorstep with a note of what had happened. You don't really expect cat fatalities in a quiet sleepy village on a lane that you'd only access to get to your house. Guess she was in the wrong place at the wrong time and someone going just a little too fast.

On another side and at my previous address, someone mounted the pavement in a car after losing control and hit a dog being taken out for it's evening walk. I heard the impact from my kitchen window. The driver of that car (unfortunately and disgusted to know it was someone I knew) just drove off. I spent 15 minutes with the dog wrapped up in one of my old blankets and it's shocked and distressed owner until the vet arrived. The dog never made it due to multiple breaks in his spine.

I have been driving now for 35 years done well over 1 million miles but I have never hit an Animal. i have seen plenty on the road side and in the middle of the road but I have never seen one that just runs straight out into the road.

^really?
Where do you drive?
Here in the lake district it's possible to have multiple animals run out in front of you in a days driving.
Deer are the worst culprits here.they dither around in the vegetation then leap out with no warning.
That said I've never hit anything yet, but I can understand how it can happen.

Until today I'd have said the same about my 10 years of driving, but this morning I was driving through one of the housing estates local and I literally saw a blur right in the corner of my eye, by the time I knew I'd seen it I felt the bump, front wheel then back wheels. frown On the way back I saw little Simon the Squirrel flat on the road, I had no chance of avoiding him. It's not like a kid or a person who you can spot as you approach, this bugger either come from a tree or a bush next to the road. Thank god I've managed to avoid cats, had to brake or swerve a few times but not hit one.

Well done for doing the right thing.

When I was 18 I was out jogging with a friend when I came across a lady with an injured cat. A car in front of her had hit it, but had went speeding off. She'd stopped and the cat was alive, but shouldn't have been.

The cat was in a bad shape, was, well, leaking all fluids so to speak, but still alive - so we bundled it into a blanket into her back seat and sent her to the local vet that I knew was open a couple of minutes away. It was clearly in pain, so the vets was the best place for it.

It wasn't nice stopping mid jog to start knocking doors in the local area with a description of a family pet, and the outcome above. It was fairly clear very quickly what house owned the cat, so I went and told them.

I almost got beat up, but there we are. I would also feel pretty bad about being told such a thing.

Seen it loads of times. Last brown trouser moment was a deer on a 70 mph dual carriage way 5 am pitch black.

I've hit 5 things. 2 x squirrels, a rabbit and 2 pheasants. Less years, less miles thank you. Every single one of those, I hit the thing as I saw it if you know what I mean. Not a single one was I over the speed limit.

Am just thankful I haven't hit a domesticated animal.

Fortunately I've never had a deer run out in front of me; I live in an area where there are road signs warning of the possibility, plenty of death wish pheasants have done so though and I'm afraid to say that I have hit a few.

Seen a few over the years on the wings waiting to go, didn't see this one. There are warning signs, it was pitch black.

Pheasants though, they have a death wish. And they bend metal when they run out, no way was I going to swerve for that but hell of a bang and the front bit under the bumper had a nice dink in it.
