....a tripe filled bone. He'll love that I thought.

Got home,unwrapped it,dog looking keen....

Gave it to him....

....and what's the first thing he does??

Takes the bloody thing out into the garden and buries the sodding thing!

I give up.

What's your dogs best treat story?

Vinnie does his standard 'hucker dance' round the treat every time he gets something decent. Chicken nugget, denta-stick, ham, sausage etc. Takes it, runs into the kitchen then dances round it for 10 min or so before eating, it's like he's thanking the gods for the treat or something.

Treat time is always interesting to watch. Hattie will scoff hers as quickly as possible but Terry will just wait till she's finished then follow her around with it in his mouth. She won't go near his food and he knows it so he blocks doorways so she can't get past and then walks up to her and then acts like she has walked up to him and then kicks off with her! Poor dog, i need to get some proper bone for her to have so the timing is the same.

Ha, I've never seen my shepherd attempt to bury anything.

Your dog is following an ancestral urge. Thousands of years ago, roaming dogs did not know where their next meal would come from, so after a better-than-expected hunt, they buried surplus food to hide it from scavengers. When these dogs became hungry, they returned to the secret location and dug up their leftovers. Dirt also served as Mother Nature’s refrigerator, keeping buried bones fresher longer by protecting them from sunlight. This natural “aging” made the bone tastier too.

Your dog is simply storing extras in a safe place to retrieve later (and possibly share with his canine visitors).

My Mother had a Rottie bh years ago, she would bury everything you gave her, ( the dog that is ) and in addition, if the dog saw you watching her, she would dig it up and bury it somewhere else.
Mum was a big choked this week as she was doing some gardening, she found a rubber squeaky chicken leg, the dogs been gone about 15 years, bless her.
