Walking a big dog and a little dog together
Discussion
Aside from the obvious comedy value from walking two dogs of vastly differing sizes; the other half and I are keen on getting a dog.
We currently live in a 2 bed apartment with a decent size balcony, with access to parks within about a 5 minute walk. We're going to be buying a house in the next 12 months, which is going to have a garden (and arguably more excitingly, as this is PH, a garage)
The current plan is to get a mini-sausage dog whilst we're in the apartment, then a golden retriever when we're settled in a house (probably in about 3 years' time)
The only concern that we have is how we would exercise two dogs with two very different exercise requirements to ensure they're both satisfied. I can't imagine a mini sausage dog would be happy with 2 hour walks/day and I wouldn't want to only exercise the retriever on a mini-sausage requirement which is about 30-40 minutes/day rather than 2 hours. Can anyone help us out?

Dachshunds can do a lot more than you'd think, though I did know one that had his claws worn down too much due to the amount of walking!
Build up its exercise tolerance as it grows and keep it slim etc and he should be able to keep up. He can potter alongside you as the retriever is chasing balls!!

Used to walk 2 westies with 3 irish wolfhounds and it was never an issue. Although when the westies got older it was a good idea to have a shopping basket handy to carry them home in.
I'd like top see a photo of that!We met a couple walking up Glastonbury Tor last year with an elderly Westie in a rucksack - looked quite at home too
As previously mentioned, you'd be surprised!! Little legs but will handle long walks easily.
One of my friends got a miniature Daxie as they assumed it wouldn't need much exercise and was too small and sausagey to be a danger to wildlife, won't want to kill badgers etc etc. people eh!!
Anyhow, she could take it out for hours and it happily keep up.

We have a French Bulldog and a Terrier, OK they are of a similar size, however they are completely different in stamina and exercise requirements, I was a bit worried about how it would work but it does work.
The Frenchie; given the correct weather, can walk for miles so; weather dependent, walking them together isn't a problem. If it is too hot or humid, the Frenchies is wrecked by about 15/20 minutes so in that instance she gets a quick walk in the morning and another in the evening and the Terrier can have proper a walk by himself during the day, if needed or if we fancy a Sunday afternoon walk.
Fortunately for us, we have a large garden so both the dogs play with each other, they can both be out all day running around and winding each other up, so sometimes a walk isn't even needed for either of them.

Yup. We sometimes only take our dachshund crosses out to purely get them out of house for a sniff. They spend the whole day chasing each other round the house and the garden. They are kanckered by 5 regardless of wether they have had a walk round the block or a 4mile walk. The Frenchie; given the correct weather, can walk for miles so; weather dependent, walking them together isn't a problem.
