After steroids, antihistamine, and non mucas powder with no sign of getting worse but not much better, little man goes under this weds, will flush his nose then fill his lungs with water to see what comes out infection wise, so worried but to hear his breathing sometimes is awful, just sounds like a cold most of the time, any one else had to put their dog through this, bex sorry to pick on you, but is this quite straightforward, know you have a lot of experience

Thankyou

It's a fiddly procedure but the general premis is simple.

It is known as a BAL Bronchoalveolar lovage. They don't fill up the lungs with water, usually only 5-20ml of saline depending on the size of the animal. A catheter is put down the endotracheal tube, saline is put down the catheter and then drawn back up, the hope is to trap enough material of use to send off to a lab (bacterial cells etc).

Not all the fluid will be removed but a proportion will, it is possible that it leaves the patient with a sl cough but shouldn't be anymore.

The trickiest thing is to do the procedure quickly as the patient needs to be disconnected from the gaseous anaesthetic to obtain access to the bronchii, so obviously they can start to wake up but this is rare.

I had it done for my cat, who struggles greatly with nasal issues

I should add some practices may use an endoscope to do the procedure, I have not seen it done this way though. The method I described is fine and works just a bit older school I suppose!

I feel for you, believe me I know how stressful it can be to know what to do for the best but it doesn't sound like your little one can carry on like this without trying to get some answers as to why.

I am sure it will be fine but I can understand your concerns cotmpletely.

All went well Wednesday, got quite a bit of mucas out so he does not sound as coldy as he did before, just waiting for results of what bacteria etc, they did say one of his tonsils was inflamed though!

Seems bit happier in himself but still keeping up with the steroids and powder in the food for now and he played nicely with the nurses thank god

I'm glad it went well. Hope it gives some answers. I remember Lucy sounding better after having it done.
Poor Lucy had to have an urgent dental yesterday. Suddenly went off food the day before and found a painful tooth. Just hope she doesn't flare up again as she has been better in last couple weeks (first time in ages!)

Keeping my fingers crossed for your little one.

Results came back with nothing untoward showing up, they think it's defo some sort of allergy and want to take some blood to try and find out what, they may be able to take blood without knocking him out depending on his manners, does any one else have a pet with allergies, would this be more of a food allergy or dust pollen, its all new to us

Just want his breathing sorted out bless him so he goes back in Monday for the bloods

Well that is good and frustrating at the same time. Fingers crossed for the allergy tests.
