Hi

Off to France soon for a couple of weeks, the Vet has recommended some additional flea and tick treatment. Passport etc sorted smile

He usually has Advantage (never had a problem)Before going last year's trip I think we used Advocate.

This time round the Vet has recommended we use Advantix and Advocate for a full treatment. Are both really necessary? We're going to the West coast just south of Brittany.

This is what we advise for the Pet Travel Scheme.

Please remember the risks of diseases to your dog from going abroad. The government are only interested in Rabies as it is zoonotic but there are a few horrible illnesses/diseases that are not in this country but are abroad that our pets are vulnerable to. As long as you have read up and know these risks then you can make an educated choice for the sake of your dog and avoid risk areas.

No probs, sorry I cane across a bit harsh, that wasn't my intention! I didn't realise until I re read it. It's just something we try to make our clients aware of before they take their dogs on holiday smile

Right I think I've sorted it

Useful site detailing which product covers which.

Continue with Frontline which (currently used with no problems) and a top up with Advocate while we're away. It's quite tough finding the info of which treatments cover what. Tapeworm is covered by a treatment given by the French Vet's before re-entry to the UK

There is a reason why we don't advise Frontlinefor dogs anymore and I think it is because it doesn't repel ticks like the Scalibor collar (which also covers against sand flies. More important if going into hotter areas) and Advantix do.

Milbemax done monthly is a heartworm prevention.

There are many reports that Frontline is no longer effective and hence it is no longer recommended.

Interesting, 1st I've heard of it. A quick google brings up all sorts of adverse info.

Loads of people here in Portugal are moaning that Frontline isn't working for them as well.

It still seems ok re ticks but it is just that it doesn't repel them in the way other products do. For fleas it seems to be struggling, though manufacturers argue not (it is not black and white, there are several reasons why it may not be seeming as effective!)
