Can a cat retain his sex drive?
Discussion
There is some very strange behaviour coming from our Rag Doll.
We have always had cats but they have been neutered as kittens. Our Max is five years old and was used as a stud cat before being neutered and put out to a rescue home.
We have had him about 9 months and apart from ripping the carpet he has been perfect. He gets on great with our other cat Merlin so he isn't lonely.
Now, just the last couple of weeks however, he spends every waking hour stomping round the house, out the flap, back in again, plod, plod, plod all the time.
And the noise! The most guttural meowing I've ever heard, and loud. and all hours of day and night. He's been checked by the vet who has given him a clean bill of health.
So, hence my curiosity as to whether he could possibly still have memories of his stud life, and if this could be a reason for the behaviour.
Or has anyone any other ideas?

There is a very small possibility bur the only way to ck is to do a blood test to ck his testosterone levels and see if thru would be high enough to trigger sexual behaviour. If it was habit induced (esp if he was a stud) I'd be wondering why it hasn't occurred in previous years.
Finally whilst he is young for it, if he was older I'd be concerned that these are behaviour traits associated with senility in cats. If it continues it may be worth investigating this further as there are things to help (aktivait for example)
Can't rule.out a memory response esp if there is a female cat in season nearby but I'd have expected him to have always been a bit like it not suddenly.
Just realised you've only had him 9 months, how old was he when he was neutered? If a recent neuter (in the last yr) and first summer neutered then it may be memory related! I have a cat breeder friend who has kept her side and neutered them so I will ask her for you

Spoke to my breeder friend she said no shouldn't react as no testosterone (unless not properly castrated). She keeps neutered studs as companions for entire females!
We are both of the mind that there may be another reason, if he doesn't settle in next week or so he may need some more ck ups.

I can't give a properly serious answer to this, but my 8 y.o boy (random moggy type) was neutered as a kitten, and still humps my cushions and one particular corner of the couch if it's covered in his blankie. Most disconcerting to hear a strange noise and turn round to see him 'at it' with a glazed expression

To contradict my original post the big sod is fast asleep snoring for England, and has been for several hours. I think he does it on purpose. We are both of the mind that there may be another reason, if he doesn't settle in next week or so he may need some more ck ups.
Really appreciate your assistance and will get bloods done as want to make sure all is well. A lifetime of cat ownership but this guy is very very special.

Our chappie does this with very similar behaviour. He had his favourite cushion, then he favoured Mrs Bombs nice fluffy dressing gown. Mmmmmmm Nice.Gassing Station | All Creatures Great & Small | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
