We live in a rural location and there are quite a few small holes in the garden, I've seen a few mice and found a couple of dead shrews in the garden but something else has decided to have a go. I did spot this little fellow out on the road just outside my driveway so maybe he's going in after a mouse or shrew? No evidence of a mole or rats, our old garden had a bit of a rat problem for a while so I know how messy they can be and their holes are bigger, this hole is only about 3-4cms across, so any ideas what it could be?

Looks like a weasel to me, I don't think they actually dig their own burrows, but use those of their prey. Could be a stoat - they tend to look a little stockier and have a dark patch at the end of their tail.

I seem to remember that the beginning of David Attenborough's / BBC's Mammals series started their section on Carnivores with a short piece on one of the two.

I'm pretty certain he was a weasel as he stood there long enough for me to look for a black tipped tail, way smaller than I was expecting as well.
It looks like it was a hole that was already dug and something else has gone in, more dirt round the hole this morning so he must have quite a nice size tunnel now whatever it is.

Could this be the first documented evidence of the result of a frozen sausage attack?

The difference between Stoats and Weasels is simple. Weasels are weasily recognisable and Stoats are stoatally different.

Sounds like a Weasel to me!

Had a look this morning and the hole has been filled in! Looks like I have a resident tidy rodent who cleans up after himself.
