So we got a lovely staff puppy, he's a great dog, very clever, he learnt sit, paw, other paw, lay down within a couple of weeks of having him (we got him at 11 weeks).

He's learnt to walk on his lead, he probably walks better off the lead, coming to you when calling and only going a few foot steps in front, he's been great with kids, other dogs and all people.

He likes going in my van or car. He even has pretty much learnt the command 'look at the fish' where he intently watches my fish tank and it's inhabitants.

However at nearly 5 months he's still using the house as a toilet, totally randomly. I know he can hold it, if I fall asleep downstairs he won't go at all, I have to convince him to go out in the morning where this morning for example he did a 32 second wee.
He will hold it in the car or van for hours, again I have to convince him to get out to go.

If he's down here on his own, it doesn't matter what time we get up there will be several wee's and several poos. If I go upstairs, usually I'll come back down to be greeted with at least one wee. It seems that it's when we leave the room, if we go out it's like he's had a piss and poo party hehe
It's every day and there's so much, where he's getting bigger some of the wee is like a flood.

Probably half the time he will ask to go out, he knows what he's doing generally.

So what can we do? He does know where to go and he does know he shouldn't be doing it indoors as he looks so guilty. We originally tried the pads, slowly moving them to the door, this was working when suddenly he just started going anywhere, we were treating him every time he asked to go out, I've tried ignoring it when he does it, I've tried immediately putting him outside, shouting at him, being nice to him.

Am I asking too much? I know he's a pup so it's to be expected but the confusion for me is I know he's very capable of holding it for several hours.

Sounds a bit like our Vinnie. He was pretty good if I was there but once left would do what he felt like. Does he have a crate? We went down that route with Vinnie in the end, I wish I'd done it sooner, only took a couple of months and he was sorted, obviously needing to remember their limits. Our puppy trainer told us their age in months plus one is how many hours they can hold the loo. So if your pup is 3 months, he'll need a pee every 4 hours.

We are still struggling with Barry; 4 months old, holds his wee all night in his crate, goes out in the morning for a pre breakfast wee, has a treat, has breakfast in his crate, goes for a walk and wees on his walk, wife puts him out before work and he wee's.

Wife comes back 3 hours later and puts him out, he wees and has a treat, comes in and 15 minutes later he is weeing on the carpet; this carries on until bed time, he never, ever goes to the door to be let out, no matter how often you put him out for a wee he will always do at least one wee indoors, tried puppy pads with the intention of moving them towards the door, however he just rips them up.

It is driving us mad.
