I'm thinking a building a garden pond. Anyone got any tips or can point me towards any reading material to give me some ideas? And I've got no prior experience with outdoor fishkeeping, so recommendations for pumps and filters (and other kit) would be welcomed.

The site I'm looking to build on is on a slight slope, so I'm expecting to have to build a retaining wall around the pond.

What sort of pond do you want?

A "wildlife" pond for newts, frogs, dragonflies, etc., or an ornamental pond for fish? To a certain extent the two are mutually exclusive because the fish will eat most of the other wildlife.

If you want to go for a wildlife pond like I have, you could do worse than reading some of the advice I received on my thread: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

It would be an ornamental pond for fish. The area I've got earmarked for it is about 3m x 2m, athough I could increase this a little if necessary.

This is a good forum for pond build ideas.

Be careful though as the costs can get a bit out of control!
