Our vet has recommended we use 'Advocate' flea treatment every month on our very small (4kg) Jackadoodle.

My wife and I are concerned about the use of strong /chemical remedies and wonder if anyone has used an alternative.

Collar?
Tablet?
Spray?
Shampoo?

Any help would be much appreciated.

We use Nexgard once a month chewable tablets and they work really well on out (very) small year old Lhaza Apso

Our Collie is now on Bravecto pills. They look like they are going to be HUGE (says it chewable). He has not had one yet as it is next week he is due. We have had to change him over as the ingredients in Advocate may not agree with his epilepsy medication and could cause him mohave more fits. The only downside is that it does not protect against lungworm so every 6 months he will have to have some liquid stuff (not sure what it is) given to him for a week to prevent lungworm.

The tablets Nexgard and Bravecto are both based on the insecticide fluralaner. Collars are impregnated with insecticide. Shampoos and sprays, likewise.

You want to kill or repel some fairly tough little insects, so most effective products will contain some kind of insecticide.

With the cats, we found collars very poorly effective compared to spot-on treatments.

There are "natural" folk remedies for fleas. The evidence for their efficacy is anecdotal at best.

We don't use chemicals.

However, previously when we tried natural remedies they have very limited effect. We tried garlic, billy no mates, various others including natural oils and even DE (which is what many swear by).

Didn't seem to work. But now they have been on raw a fair while, we don't seem to have flea problems (touch wood!). We don't use anything..

Tickle his left ear every third Tuesday, just as effective as any of the "natural remedies" and completely free!

We have used Bayer Soresto collars on both our dogs, and I was pleased with the overall results. No evidence of fleas and a reduction in the number of ticks.
