Well it started with a knock at the door at 11 am. A woman was standing there asking about our gsd he is fine i said as he was stood next to me. Its ok she said there has been one hit by a car down the road and its in a bad way. We thought it was yours. No i explained but there is another further down the road. Its not theres as she already went and they sent he down to us. Ok i say and off she went. Turn to the wife shall we have some toast but in reality i knew what was going to happen. Lets just go down and see if we can help its a dog and we love dogs. Get there this gsd is in a terrible state. Police there we ask if we can help. They have tried to get hold of a vet with not much luck. Put him in the car and we will take him to the local emergency vets i said. We manage to slide him on to a parcel shelf some one lent us in to the back of the estate he goes. Wife gets in with him police woman comes with me. We get to the vets he is rushed in examined with me , the wife and police there. Top and tail of it he has broken his back and not going to recover from this. So the next dilemma is who makes the final decision. Its not our dog and police where unsure so i think its ultimately up to the vet. We all discuss and all come to the same conclusion. Its to bad the dog wont recover. So the decision from the vet is to have him pts. Me and the wife held him in his final moments while he slipped in to a deep sleep. No more pain run free little doggie over the bridge. No chip or tag so we will probably never know the owner. I would like to tell them he was not alone in his final moments.

Virtual pint to you for your good deed. The owner will be happy to know that someone did what you did for their dog, I know I would be.

Just a quick update. We ound the owner yesterday. They contacted the rozzers who in turn contacted us. The owner is gutted as it turns out the dog got out after the bad wind blew a fence down. We explained what happened and he was grateful that the doggie was not alone during his final moments. As it turns out he was called diesel same as our gsd.

frown. Very sad for him but at least he knows and more importantly knows his dog was cared for in his last moments.

I think this story is doing the rounds on FB - I remember both dogs being called Diesel. Well done for taking the time to care, OP, I know MrsC & I would be eternally grateful if anyone did this for us, horrendous as the outcome may have been.
