Walking our two dogs on Sunday with my 11yr old lad & he asked why we always see so many dogs when the sun's shining.

We've been walking our dogs here for over 11yrs so it's a valid question, it is always very busy on a nice day & nearly deserted when the weather is foul. Do their dogs not like bad weather or something?

And what's going on with the people who park their car by the gate, walk into the 1st field then stand at the top of the hill throwing a ball for their dog whilst chatting on their mobile? Does that really count as a walk to some people? My two get 20-40mins proper walk at least, weekends can be 2-3hrs when I have the time. If I stood throwing a ball for 10-20mins A: they wouldn't fetch it anyway! B: I'd expect them to get pretty agitated & badly behaved & rightly so.

Not just the weather but shorter days. I walk my Weim around the local country park every evening. In summer I see a fairly large number of regular dogs ever day. Once the clocks change it's down to a hardcore of just a few even when the weather is good.
Do they just walk around the block? Are they just putting up with having an under exercised, bonkers dog around the house?

Our greyhound doesn't like the rain, but once we have him wrapped.up in his coat and flashing collar if.it's a bit dark out he will go all wrapped up.

I work so oh takes him out for an.hour or so twice a day week days and we have a nice.walk with friends most weekends.

If for any reason we don't walk him in the evening all he does.is.sit and wine at you, he lets you know you have done wrong :-D.

Also there is always even more out for Xmas day and boxing.day.

At this time of year our two get walked when I get home from work, typically about 5pm when it's just getting dark. Don't expect to see anybody then, see the occasional nutter like myself wandering around the deserted country park in the dark!

Surely if you have a dog it needs walking regardless? Surely not all of these people are home during the day to walk them?

What surprised me after my first summer of dog ownership. Was just how many people don't take advantage of lovely long evenings. My usual walking spots were deserted after 7pm in June and July. I am fortunate working from home I never walk the dog in the dark.

A lot of people are fair weather walkers IME. Come a sunny morning, lots out and about.

When it is p***ng down however, you always meet the same few people biggrin

Agree with a lot of replies here - mine gets his 3/4 20 minute walks every day regardless of the weather and much longer at weekends/days off.

Surely half the fun of being a dog owner is returning home with them soaking wet and then a) try and dry them b) watch as they then run wild on a daftie after dried !!

Took mine out every day last year, first thing in the morning, 1 -2 hours at 2:00p.m. and then again in the evening. The only walk of the day I could gaurantee the Lab would be up for if it was raining was the long one in the afternoon. She HATES the rain yet you cannot keep her out of the water!

The Basset(ish) is too thick to notice what the weather is doing so goes anyway.

I'm okay so long as I wrap up warm and wear gloves/hat etc but the mutts never seem to notice the temp.

As said above, sunny days (even in winter) you see loads of people, cold, wet and miserable days, same old die hards. I've got to know loads of people through traipsing around in the bloody rain.

Our Border Terrier's a right little diva and hates going out in the cold and wet. She'll hurtle to the door when she realises one of us has grabbed the lead and treats but when you open the door to foul weather she stops dead and looks up with an "are you mad" expression.

Her displeasure evaporates as soon as she spots the first thing to chase - normally a squirrel. She gets a minimum of an hour walk every morning; longer on weekends. This time of the year I tend to walk her after work for at least 30 minutes whilst OH prepares dinner.

I tend to do a quick scan of the fields with a torch to look for reflections from eyes of deer, fox, badger, etc. to try and spot them before the dog can smell them and hare off in pursuit - I must look like a blooming lighthouse sometimes!
