Discussion
Always had dogs , and recently have just lost our old dog , just wondering if anyone has a uk wolf dog, thinking of getting a pup.

Nice looking dogs, never heard of them before. Some of them are very similar to our Huskey/Lab cross (except for her floppy Lab ears)
Found this link, http://www.wolfdogrescue.co.uk/index.php/about-wol... some of the hunting traits would put me off personally.

I would never get one. I wouldn't be able to relax around it and neither I suspect it around me. The natural tendency and habits haven't been reduced though long periods of domestication.
Why do you want a wolf with the range of domesticated animals available which would be happy to live side by side with you?

I would read that bit on the website about "is a wolfdog right for you" very carefully. like these

I would guess you need to be outdoors three to four hours a day with a dog like that to keep it interested.
We have 2 Northern Inuit bhes (GSD X Husky) One looks very wolf like and the other is a husky wolf look a like. Both are 6 months old. They are responding well to training and are very obedient. They are great with the kids and the Cat and they have both surprised me as i thought they was going to be hard work.
No issue with the hunting as they are both good at recall far better then my parents terriers. The only problem i have with them is they love to dig no just small holes but big ones!!
We got them after we lost our 2 GSD'd earlier last year and wanted something a little different
May be the Inuit is a better way to wolf look a like than the wolf dog?

Great looking dogs.. But i feel its best to get something for the purpose you need / lifestyle.. Im sure it will not be an easy task to manage the wolf dog..
I needed a protection dog/guard dog and got a Central Asian Ovcharka.. Gentle and great with kids at home but can be very very mean if he wants to

As others have said, try to make sure the dog suits your lifestyle.

Lovely dog but I'm willing to bet extremely intelligent and difficult to train as they think they know better? I needed a protection dog/guard dog and got a Central Asian Ovcharka.. Gentle and great with kids at home but can be very very mean if he wants to

I feel your pain. I have a Kangal Dog who is as smart as anything but will ignore you completely if he feels he knows best. The sad part is that this had an ill effect on his walks as I can no longer let him off the lead without him running off in to the distance to explore and me panicking for the next hour or 2...
His recall used to be excellent but now he's older nothing will get him back if he doesn't want to come back.

Wait till they hit adolescence, most northern breeds are great with obedience, recall etc. until they hit a certain age then they all of a sudden think they know better Pickled said:

Along with LGDs, it is once they are mature - 18-24mths. At that point their "job" becomes their sole focus, which means recall goes out the window.. Generally speaking at least. Robatr0n said:

Ah man, I had a Kangal before my Ovcharka.. Amazing beasts, unfortunately I had the same problem as you My kangal ran away a few times and once was gone for 2 hours !! Sadly we lost him in a car accident He had left a good memory in everyone who had met him and lived a good life.. We wanted a similar dog hence why we went for a Central Asian Ovcharka. He is slightly more obedient, can let him off the lead in parks and open spaces, but if there are other dogs or animals hes not used to, then I need to leash him :/His recall used to be excellent but now he's older nothing will get him back if he doesn't want to come back.
I know all the reasons why you shouldn't have one but I could definitely justify one but then I do that with Wolfhounds, Mastiff's,Gt Danes etc .All dogs need a level of care I am sitting here with 3 German Shepherds all fast asleep all rescue Dogs.
A good experienced owner could give a Dog like that a very good home and an active productive life.
The problem will occur when they go to the wrong owners. But what an Animal

I'm really sorry to hear that. I've only met one person who used to own a Kangal (other than the breeder) so nobody knows what he is and he attracts a lot of attention. In the main, he is a big softie but he got attacked by a German Shepherd when he was a puppy and as I'm sure you would appreciate, we can't have him off the lead anywhere near one now as he doesn't like them one bit and makes this known.
Sorry for the thread derailment, OP.
