It wasn't a problem until a couple of months ago - perhaps something to do with the onset of cold weather - but my 13-yr old cat is now starting to do serious damage to my very nice carpet that was fitted last February. I try to protect each new 'scratching area' with something but she just moves on to a new bit.

Is there anything I can do to stop my 13-yr-old moggy doing further damage? Thanks!

Spray it with Feliway or Pet Remedy, put a scratching post near it, tape tin foil over the area.

Thanks - would the likes of PetSmart sell those?

I'd prefer not to put tin foil over the whole carpet and I'm certain a scratching post would be ignored.

Surprsingly she's very good with the leather furniture and makes a visible effort not to use her claws when jumping up.

Should do, both are in Pets at Home.

Hmmm, the whole carpet... Scratching or kneading? Pepi kneads the carpet by the bed a few times each morning, as he's a house cat & I clip the sharp tips off his claws each week it doesn't damage it, but it sounds awful!! However, she'll not like you suddenly starting to clip nails at her age.

Well, if I cover up the area that she uses, she just moves to a fresh bit. Up to 4 now frown

It's usually in the very early morning - sometimes it wakes me up and I shout at her to stop but of course even if I got out of bed and charged downstairs the damage is done. Damn annoying.

Feliway is something like £40 in Pets-at-Home and £15 on Amazon.

P-a-H is just a rip off.

Hmm. Can I use pepper or something handy on the meantime?

why not shut her in the kitchen? Put a bean bag out there she'll be fine.

If the kitchen had a door it would work! But then of course she'd only wake me up at 5.00am beating on the door...

I think small landmines may be the answer... or maybe the Feliway.

Try a scratching post placed over the area scratched. Get a really tall one so she can scratch at full stretch.

you could try buying a hessian doormat & place it in the room at night. You might find he loves it so much he will use that rather than the carpet. Ones that have this sort of design rather than the type that stick up like a brush:
