Persuade me to get one please. Have a spaniel already that is a part trained gun dog though I am not sure which part so the GSP would also be part trained eventually. Already know they can be a bit ... well ... pointy and that they love to hunt.

A relative of mine has 3 of them, I think she re-homes them too. If you are interested I could probably put you in touch.

My dog 'Scout' passed away earlier this year.

What a great dog, I would struggle to put into words how good he was.

He was everything i wanted, he was loyal, obedient, athletic and unbelievably easy to live with.

We wanted a dog to fit in with our love of the outdoors and so after some research we decided on a GSP, and what a great choice it was, he went everywhere with us, Snowdon, scafell just to name a few.

He was 13 when he passed and in all that time apart from his vaccinations he only ever went the vets once for a heavily gashed paw!

I would have no hesitation in recommending a GSP to anyone, and if i haven't convinced you yet maybe these photos will.....

P.S i didn't even know you get get black ones until i saw his dad, i had to have one then!

we used to use that head collar when my daughter was walking him, just for more control.

I have two gsps and had a gwp. All are great dogs but I'm not having any more after these two. They are too clever for their own good and keep on pushing the boundaries even though they know what they should be doing. Mine are well trained but if they engage their brain before opening their ears you're fooked.

Plus there is loads of work for labs picking up no body wants pointers they are considered hardmouthed and a pita. If you're rough shooting or working them under hawks they are fine.

Edited to add mine are black/ white birkenwald bhes they source their dogs from Germany where the breeding requirements are much stricter in terms of working ability.

If you're going to get one go in with your eyes open they are lovely dogs great temperament very loyal but very head strong and have a big prey drive.

We got Ceasar, our GSP at 14 weeks old last week, we also bought an English Pointer at the start of December who is now 16 weeks old.

We got Ceasar from Paul at riverside-stud.co.uk, very nice bloke, loads of dogs to choose from of all colours, from 3 months to 7 months old too, he seems very much geared up for the working dog owner rather than the pet owner though. Ceasar has been brilliant so far, within less than a week he's walking off the lead at my side while Nero, our EP is running around like an idiot. He's very loving, loyal and quick on the uptake but as said, he's only 14 - almost 15 weeks old so the proof will be in the pudding, time is needed to give a full report.

I have GSP/lab crosses both trained and used in the Field. Cracking dogs but too intelligent for their own good and quite headstrong.
They will take a lot of exercise, and I mean a lot.
Great dogs though. My uncle has 9 dogs 4 of them GSPs but work is harder to come by as pointing is pretty specialised.
We do the grouse counting before August and also pointing work on woodcock on the scottish Islands.
Mine are more used on pheasant shoots with one dog excellent picker up and on "runners". The other is a better hunter on the beating line.

At work.
