We got our 3 and a half month puppy about a month ago and everythings going great. On mondays he goes next door for the day (who have 2 puppys and two older dogs) and he seems to love it. Just wondering when is the best time to get another dog, is it best to introduce a little mate for him now or wait abit?

If you have the room in the house I'd say go for another now.

My father has two retriever females and they get along like a house on fire - generally ignore other dogs on walks and play continually with each other - they also look out for each other, especially the older one. She keeps an eye on the younger one all the time when out.

We thought about with Ozzie - he died in Sept - we often felt we gave him everything but he perhaps could have done with the stimulation of a buddy. We've since brought in Archie but our house is small and 1 is currently enough.

I'd say go for it.

House is only small but weve got enough room in garden for two littledogs to chase eachother around. Our puppys a yorkie/dachshund so we would be looking at another small dog. Im just watching him now playing with a plastic bottle when he could be playing with another dog...

Ahhh - I'd say go for another then. Ozzie was a yorkie and it's probably our only regret that we never got him a playmate. When we visited my dad he loved chasing the retrievers around. I would recommend it - you will have no end of laughs watching two play and they will be great company for each other.

Agreed - there is the odd exception, but most dogs love the company of their own kind. I would never have a single dog again (the last 'only dog' I had was over 20 years ago, since then I've always had at least two, and more recently up to four at any one time).

Hmm im going to have a look around. My pup is about 90% housetrained now so hopefully that will rub on to the new one (wishful thinking).

The Mrs and i do try are best to keep him entertained but because hes such an energetic little bugger i think he gets bored of us big lumbering humans.

Am i best of getting one of a similar age? Male or Female?

We have has 3 dogs in our house for over 12 years and I think its really a good thing for them to have a companion.
Our latest little chap came to us at 8 weeks old and by some miracle he has never messed in the house and indicates his desire to go outside even though for the first 3/4 weeks he had a nasty stomach bug.
I would go for another Dog now try a rescue dog it might be the perfect answer for you and your pup.

Having had two young dogs before I'm not sure I'd want to again, classic case of them leading each other astray! It's also harder to train them when you have two, ideally you need time with each dog alone, how many of us have got time to walk two dogs separately?

My spaniel was about 4 when my OH got her Westie, now I walk both it's impossible to spend that 10mins a day with my dog, his general obediance is still good but not nearly as good as it used to be.

Having said that, if you want two & you can look after them then do it smile

Well i mentioned maybe getting another puppy to my next door neighbour (they have two dachshund/border terrier cross pups and two older dogs) and one of those puppies was meant to be for their daughter who has just found she pregnant... anyways looks like were going to have another puppy in the house in the morning! She came round and said if we want one for free we can have her as they know we will look after her. Shes called hattie and shes a lovely little thing and our little pup knows her and they get on well! Gonna be a bloody mad house but atleast they both like messing around together! Must try get some sleep!

Well, I would say two puppies of that age will be a lot of hard work, BUT if you have the time then go for it.

Little update:

Hattie joined us this afternoon! Terrence is behaving better since she got here (seems like hes trying to show off for me) and the both fell asleep together on the sofa. They have the odd squabble which i assume is them sorting out pecking order but overall really happy. Will upload some piccies when i go to bed!
