Why so many house spiders this year?
Discussion
Ahrrrr!
Just your usual giant house spider, but we seem to be getting a lot of them this year, they seem bigger and earlier in the season than usual.
We usually get a couple over Sept/Oct but we've had 8 in the last couple of weeks and they've all been whoppers.
Are there more this year? Are they coming out earlier? Assume it is the males on the pull, what do they know about my house that I don't?!
We have been using some 'no more spider' spray and also an electronic plugin deterrent. I'm wondering if the latter is actually working (I was unconvinced) and is making them come out of hiding?
Our cats are useless too. They just watch while I chase the damn monsters down.

Funny that. We've had absolutely none so far this year, normally have dozens of the blasted things here in rural Warwickshire. Pet hate of mine - I'm terrified of the bloody things!
We do, however, have loads of the skinny almost-invisible spiders in almost every corner of the house. Don't mind them.

I'm pretty sure it's the mating season for these spiders - it's the males that are generally seen as they search out the females. The good news is that the females, I believe, are rarely seen. Which is a good thing, as they are usually a fair bit bigger than the males.
IMO, spiders like these eat more annoying insects anyway, so don't mind them.... too much!

Handy hint for all you spider catchers.
When you see Boris making a dash for freedom across your floorcovering, stamp loudly on the floor near (not on) the hideous creature. This makes him/her freeze and stay stock still, wondering what you're going to do next. This gives you time to find a glass and card, to catch your quarry and get rid.
Handy hint 2: I generally throw Boris out of the window or off the top of the fire escape - both first floor. The spider always spreads its legs out and and falls slowly and safely. Must be instinct but I've never seen one not run away on touchdown.

I was happily lying on the sofa at Mum & Dad's watching Ramsey's Hotel Hell on Tuesday evening after spending a week in hospital and I felt something on my shoulder just as I saw something out of the corner of my eye.
It was one of those 8 legged creeps, it leapt from the ceiling and landed on my shoulder, I obviously screamed and ran across the room and hopped on top of a stool whilst Dad sat in his chair almost splitting his sides laughing whilst Mum attempted to catch it with a kids fishing net. I'm well aware that they can't hurt me and it's a bit daft but I just cant help it, horrible thing terrified me, took me a while to get to sleep that night even though Mum had caught and evicted it!
