One of Mrs Saleen's cats had his food as normal last Thursday and since then hasn't eaten a thing, he has in the past been off colour where he hasn't been interested in food but 24 hours later he is back to normal and always hungry, because of this we left him alone and yesterday he hid homself away in a quiet corner and didn't move all day. This was a concern so a quick call today to the emergency vet and half an hour later we have him being looked at by the vet, the cat had a temperature of just over 40c so all is not right, he is given an anti inflamatry to start with along with something to get his appetite back and due to him being dehydrated the vet brings out 2 huge 500ml syringes fills them with a solution and injects them into the cat leaving him looking like a camel!

Have to take the cat back tomorrow afternoon for a check on his temperature etc with the possibility of them keeping him in for blood tests etc if he hasn't perked up, thankfully he has perked up and has taken in some tuna so fingers crossed he is on the right road.

That amount cannot be right. You must mean 50ml syringes. No vet would ever give 1l of fluid sub cut in a cat (plus it occurs to me that you can't get 500ml syringes smile). Ideally your cat should have been put on drip if he really hadn't eaten for that long but the fluids he's had will help as will the other injections.

Even if he perks up a lot, still take him in for a check up in case the treatment gives just a temporary respite.

Hope he recovers quickly.

I might have got the amount wrong but they were bloody big syringes! (approx 6" long x 1" diameter), just back from the vet and they are keeping him in for a day or 2 and placing him on a drip as he is still dehydrated and doing blood tests etc, he has eaten a small amount of food but is still not himself. Vet thinks he could have an infected pancreas so fingers crossed he gets well soon.

We have an estimate of the bill for £426 (not including the £144 bill for yesterday) and I was eek
But thankfully both cats are insured with Petplan smile so just the excess to pay (i'm glad we didn't 'self insure')

How old is your cat approx? Sounds very similar to the way my cat was acting. He was 17, and had really bad Kindeys, too bad to really do anything by the time we realised. He'd been off his food for a while and also looking to hide in dark quiet corners.

Hope he improves soon smile

If he's only 3, then hopefully its nothing too serious.

Hopefully he makes a sppedy recovery and is back to shredding your curtains and sofa in no time smile

Had a call from the vet this morning to give an update on the moggy, his temperature is back to normal, he is more alert but is still not eating. The vet also said they did more blood tests to be sent off as the original test is showing him as anemic, however this they said could be caused by his immune system being all over the place at present with it fighting whatever infection he has making him ill. We went to the vet around half 4 today to visit the moggy and we also took in some of his normal food incase he was just being fussy, he was pleased to see us even though he was feeling sorry for himself laying there with a drip in hos front leg, I made a fuss of him and put the food bowl infront of him and he ate all the food in it so I put some more of his normal food in and he ate most of that aswel, fingers crossed he will keep eating and he can come home tomorrow.

Had a call from the vet yesterday morning informing us that we could collect the cat later that day, we collected him around 5pm and the vet nurse updated us on what meds he had been given etc, they advised to keep him in for the evening as one of the meds had made him a little drowsy, he had been eating all day and he ate again once we got home and he had food with his brother (who was very pleased to see him as he had been mooching about wondering where he was), they have given us Synulox tablets which he has to take twice a day.
Today was a different day and when I got up this morning both cats were making their usual noise to be fed with the poorly cat eating all his no problem, I get home from work and there on the kitchen floor is 2 pidgeon wings, lots of feathers and a pile of seeds eek with the now back to normal poorly cat looking pleased with himself along with a podge in his belly smile

Back to the vet tomorrow for a quick check up and hopefully the blood test results.

Took the cat back to the vet for his check up this afternoon and to get the blood test results, the test for pancreatitis came back negative so now have no idea of what infection/virus made the little man so ill with a temp of just over 40c, at present he is not generating red blood cells which is causing the anemia so needs to go back for more blood tests in 2-3 weeks to see if this has changed, fingers crossed evertyhing will be back to normal and whatever infection/virus he had has been the cause of the anemia.

Update time,
Took the little monster back to the vet yesterday for blood to be taken for testing for the anemia, vet called today to inform us that everything is back to normal and whatever made him ill had caused the anemia, the vet has signed him off now so no more visits smile

That's approximately the size of a 50 or 60ml syringe.

Sadly today we have had to take the cat back to the vet as again he is showing the same symptoms as when I started this thread back in August 2013, they took his temp and as it was 40.5 they have again kept him in to do blood tests etc, fingers crossed whatever is wrong with him this time they can give us an answer.
Odly enough his litter brother was taken to the vet approx 3 weeks ago for showing same symptoms, kept in for a couple of nights given loads of meds but no definitive answer to what was the cause.
I did think they could have been/accidently eaten some sort of poison but neither cats have vomited and nothing showed up in the blood, hopefully this time we can get an answer. smile

Decided the best option to create less stress was to keep the cat at home, I have made a daily trip yesterday and today with him to the vet for his temp to be taken and a daily shot of Metacam, his temp today is back down to 39.3c, he is eating a bit better and I have seen him drink so fingers crossed he is on the right track. He is still sleeping most of the day but he is getting better slowly.

Good job Mrs Saleen has them both insured smile
