Dog owners, do you think this is acceptable behaviour? Would you let your dog do this?

A couple of nights ago I had lifted my toddler son out of the car and was putting him down through the house door, when a woman with a dog walked passed us and her dog stopped and started pissing on my wife's car right in front of the door.

I asked her if she didn't mind stopping her dog pissing on my car. To which I got a gob full of abuse. I was told to get a life and that I was stupid etc etc

If she had just pulled the dog off and said sorry I wouldn't have minded, but she just stood there watching it emptying itself all over the wheel.

Similar things have happened a few times before as my terraced house is on a junction, and when I've asked them not to do it one responses I've had is, "where do you expect them to go?" Well not on my fking car or front door step thanks. I ask them if they'd be happy if I did the same to their house or car and they have no response so just get aggressive.

IMO these are rude, ignorant owners with a badly trained dog.

umm, I am between the two answers.

Clearly I try not to let him piss on anyones property / car, however sometimes I can not stop him as he is not on the lead and just looks at me as I shout and gesticulate...
Whilst he pisses away...
Yes but if on lead totally out of order

Whilst on lead other peoples property is a no-no. On saying that ours is just over four and he still squats.

Not really bothered, its not going to kill me. I'm quite precious about my cars but that would be going a bit far.
As for letting my dogs do it, they're bhes so never thought about it.

I will always try and stop my dog and as he is usually on a lead near cars it's usually quite easy but I know he has managed to on occasion but I will halt his progress!

The described scenario is just rude of the owner. To allow it in front of the car owner is bad enough but to become offensive when asked to stop her dog is too much. I'd be stopping my dog before being asked and apologising. It's lack of respect for persons property.

I won't let Stella pee on my neighbours hedges/grass, after pulling her off for the first few walks she waits until we get to the field now.

Yes I'd be a bit squeamish about it too

I've always thought that as a dog owner you are obliged to keep it under control at all times. If that means that you have to have it on a lead to stop it pissing on other peoples property, so be it.

I would never let my dog cock his leg against someone's car, gate post, fence or anything else that wasn't appropriate...

And it was the easiest thing in the world to train him not to...... As a pup, if he even looked like he was going to cock his leg, I'd just firmly say NO, and take him from the area..... He soon got it, and now he never even attempts to pee anywhere but where he's supposed to...

I don't even let my dog piss on my own car. He still manages to sometimes, I'm sure he does it to annoy me.

I don't even let our dogs pee up against walls/hedges etc that are not ours. Once into the fields/rural roads they can pee up the trees etc but that is it.

Dogs will be Dogs , they usually only mark the spot where one has gone before. Does it really matter ?

My two piss where they want , not often on anyone's property but if they wanted to they would.

Lazy ownership though really as it us not difficult to reduce the chances of your dog peeing on certain areas

A good kick in the nuts gets the message across...

You could try it on the dog, too...

It's not lazy at all , they are Dogs , they don't see things in terms of material objects , if they want to mark their spot why not let them , Cats do it all the time , I'd rather they didn't , I'm not a Cat person but it's instinctive behaviour so I think it's their prerogative.

There is a fine line between domesticating an animal and imposing unnecessary constraints on it's natural behaviour. I agree fowling of the footpath is wrong but like 99% of owners I allow this and then clean up afterwards ,not actively forbid a Dog from relieving itself in a certain area.

I'm with bex on this one. Why not stop your dog! It'll just go around the corner, no harm done. As the owner it is your job to see things as material object and should step in and stop the dog from doing it. It's not like you're stopping him from doing his favourite thing, just making him wee elsewhere.

As far as I can see it there is not a single possile justified reason for letting your dog do it, its just lazy/rude/ignorant IMO.

So what if it was a cat , would you feel the same ? Should the owner follow it around and discourage it from urinating on someone's precious alloy wheel ?

I'd follow them home and piss on their car. It's natural after all. It would also become my pissing spot on the way home from the pub.
