Just on the hunt for our new steed and thought this would be the best place to ask...

What vehicles do you dog owners drive? We have two dogs so I am looking at an estate/larger vehicle!

We use a Passat estate as the dog wagon, it was one of the few that our dogs could stand up in the boot.... The smaller dog (large GSD size) however travels on the back seat with a harness.

How big are the dogs, do you need to use a car crate?

I use a skoda octavia estate, plenty of room in the back for my two german shorthaired pointers.

For two terrier crosses (less than 10kg) a Qashqai with two of these in the boot:

http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dog_cages_carri...

They fit the boot well (without the parcel shelf, but they are in there permanently anyway) and mean the dogs are secure and have their own space which seems to keep them happy and quiet.

Used to have an Avensis estate where they just went into the boot. There was too much space for them and one would invariably knock the other. One also liked looking out of windows too much which they now can't do.

When me and Mrs Ghost had 3 Golden Retrievers (a certifiable number to be honest) we had a Jeep Grand Cherokee. When we went down to 2 (now 1 unfortunately) we bought a Freelander 2.

Both excellent vehicles to carry dogs in and nice to drive to boot thumbup

I have a crated out dog van, but then I need to transport dogs from the pound in safe conditions.

Got two large and two small crates in a Kangoo and still have some storage space. Works well for me and I don't need to worry about mud and hair in the car anymore smile

What breed?

Our collies go in a pickup, 4x4 or quad.

One point i would note is the age - as they get older, the closer to the grund the boot is, the better.

Cheers for all the replies people. We have been looking through the classifieds all day at all manor of vehicles!

3 Series/5 Series/X5/Disco/Freelander... and on and on and on....

Our two are both female, a Rottweiler and an Olde Tyme Bulldog. Our Rottie isn't too tall, about the same as a mid-large labrador.

I'm liking the capability of a 4x4 but the refinement in a 5 series would be lovely!

We toyed with the idea of a 4x4... but went S4 avant, initially. wink

Now we've got a dog-snotter of an MG-ZT - dogs (both medium sized) just mooch around in the boot and look out the window.

I think you would get away with a 5 series with those two. They have buckets of room in the back and the boot line will be lower for you to lift them over.

I use a Freelander 2 with my big Vizsla boy and little Border Terrier girl. It's ideal for them. Not the biggest of boots but good enough for my job. On the back seat I keep a couple of largish clear plastic boxes with all my work stuff in. Back seats are rarely used by people...just as well!

The OH has a new X3 and the boot in that is pretty good, though you are unable to remove the pull out black cover independently of the pull up mesh screen if you're with me? As a result the flappy part of the screen hangs down a bit and gets in the way for the bigger dog.

Custom solutions are rarely cheap, but this is a local company I know and have met at Crufts also. Excellent products here: http://www.boot-buddy.com/index.asp

I was carting our retriever around in the back of my Civic Type R then we bought a Landrover Defender.
Problem is it's really high for her to jump into! She manages but I think we're going to have to buy a ramp for her to walk up now.laugh

Subaru Legacy Spec B tourer. Plenty of room in the boot for the shepherd and a bit of fun when she is not on board. A blummin bargain at the moment too for what you get.

I've got a checz oilburner ( Skoda Furby Mk1 ) - and my old Cairn finds it a dawdle getting in the rear - he can ,on occasions get in the boot ,when GS has his chair on the rear seats ( more often ,TUBS needs a hand getting in the boot area .).But don't forget ,he's a big Cairn , approx 11kg, and older than yer average dog - he's almost 11 years old. So he's entitled to a bit of a hand up .

We have this problem with our Springer, who we prefer to be in a cage when in the car. Most estates have a sloping back window which precludes its use.
Wife hasa Peugeot 306 and it doesn't fit, it used to fit her old 405 Estate and would probably fit a 306 estate but....she wanted a smaller car.
I have an old Volvo 940 estate and you could get a whole pack of hounds in the back of that, all in their own cages!
Othe prob with the 306 and most hatchbacks is their hatch doesn't reach down to the boot floor, their is a drop on the inside of about 6". This scares the dog as she cannot judge it getting in or out and tends to clip it with a rear leg sometimes.
Sorry started to ramble, hope this helped.

For my daily hack I've always had a shed but convinced my wife an ML would be good for the dogs (it was very cheap).
We've got a hammock that clips between headrests and their seatbelts keep them secure!!!
It's fun watching sasha lean in!!

I've got 3 dogs (2 lurchers and a whippet) and they all fit in the boot of my i30 with the seats folded flat. I have fitted 5 dogs in there in the past (said 3 plus 2 greyhounds).
