New(ish) Baby and Puppy?

Hi all!
My wife and I would love another dog - our last one actually got re-adopted by my parents from us as we were both working full time - I walked her in a morning on my lunch and after work, but then my car broke down and I could no longer get home on lunch, so my parents had her in the week and we decided that a bow on her at Christmas was a great present for them and Minny (our ex dog!) as they are retired - she now has a pet passport and has been to the South of France with them - lucky little buggar!
Anyway - roll forward 12 months and we now have a beatiful 6 month old baby girl. We desperately want another dog, miss having one around and the nice long walks and all the rest of the fun that comes from owning a dog... A friend has taken in a 4-5 month old puppy to try and find it a new home as the last owners could not (for whatever reason) keep the dog and were sending it to the pound.
Our little girl is totally intrigued with dogs and my wife is now at home with the intention of only going back to work part-time and very locally - my parents will be looking after the little one and most likely said potential new dog when Mrs Reedy156 is at work if it clashed with my work.
The dog in question is allegedly a Doberman x Jack Russell (not sure how?), but with the markings I think more likely it is Doberman x Collie...
Am I correct in thinking that the ages of our baby and the puppy we will be doing the right thing? My friend is fetching the pup round for the day to socialise and see how Mrs Reedy156 gets on with two babies as I have said the ball is in her court....
