I have never thought about keeping rats before but they do look kinda cute and fun. Looks like they are quite little characters.

That thread reminded me just how much I liked rats and made me decide to do something about it.

So 3 weeks ago I got 2 new additions to the family. Bill and Ted. Hopefully if I can get them to keep still long enough I will get some photos up.

oh they are the best small furries ever, very friendly and want to interact with you, unlike hamsters, gerbils, mice, guinea pigs and rabbits (all of which i have had/have) I often walk about the house with one on my shoulder! they just hold on and stay there lol , Also we just open the cage and let them roam free, they are so clean and very easy to catch as they generally come back when you call them smile great pets!

I was told they constantly urinate (albeit a small amount) so they leave a trace??

perhaps wild ones so they find thier way back to he nest? as i type we have the two boys running about on the sofa, which we have no problem with as they never wee or poo out of the cage smile

They are all lovely, I remember when our 2 boys were that small!

We also open the cage door and let them run around the living room. Such good pets, they are so friendly and just love to climb up and sit on us.

Of those we have, and have had, only 2 have weed alot - Lupin, when he got excited when running around.. so does Tristen when he's really giddy out of the cage. but all the others, nope. used to walk around with Dave on my shoulders for hours without a problem of a wet shoulder.

Male rats generally do constantly urinate (or at least the 3 I had did) so unless this has been "evolved" out of them I would agree, it's not a huge amount but mine certainly did and it is quite normal ( http://www.ratbehavior.org/WhatIsMyRatDoingFAQ.htm... )

No ours don't do it when they are out on the floor and on the settee either
