Hey everyone in All creatures great and small!
New to this part of PH but thought I would post in here now I am thinking about going back to tropical fish keeping!

Many moons ago (when I was about 13y/o) I owned a 40L tropical fish tank with an assortment of fish for a good couple of years.
Sadly when I went away on holiday with parents (as you do when your a kid) there was a drastic heater mal-function which killed all the fish frown.

Disappointed with this I gave up fish keeping and sold my tank.

Reading all of these Tropical fish tank posts has got me wanting another one as im older and far more patient now! (And a nice calming hobby would be nice).

Annoyingly the only size of tank I can really fit in my bedroom is a 40cm wide by 30ish deep tank (thats the only surface area available to put the tank on).
Which means the tank can only be about 25L which im not too fussed about, I know its easier keeping fish in a larger tank, but i can keep a close eye on a smaller one!

What do you guys and gals think of this as a kit?

Not looking for too much expense for a room tank, something thats not too bad to look at with great looking fish inside biggrin.

Thanks for reading,

Any advice or questions more than welcome!!

Welcome!

All I would put in a 25l tank is shrimp. Others may have a different opinion.

Thanks smile, even following the 1-2" of fish rule per gallon?

Not even something hardy like guppies? (apart from it'll be a pain when they breed)

Hi, yes even following that rule. You have to apply that to larger tanks rather than something so small because of all the health risks involved.

Obviously some people keep fish like that, possibly quite happily with regular water changes, but personally I do not think it is fair or fun. The amount of up keep in a daily basis with a tank this small would be a bit of a downer.

There will always be a conflict of opinion on this subject, so just do some reaserch and do what is best.

No, no I'd consider some plants too!

Yes! biggrin

I always suggest getting as big a tank you can afford and fit in the room.

25 litre unsuitable for fish of any kind IMHO. 54 litre at least enables you to have a few fish!

I just want some crabs. Nothing special, I just find them hilarious to watch.

What sort of stuff would I need?

As long as your not planning to wall mount the TV above the tank?

That could end quite badly!

Why would mounting it about the tank be a bad idea? =/

And some type of rocks/fbogwood feature...

So, taking into consideration the water displacement from the plants, sand, rocks and or bogwood, there might be room for about 15l of water.

OP, you definately need to go bigger!

Yes I know now my proposed size was a bad idea.

However, how come its a bad idea to mount a TV above a tank?

Electricity and water do not mix! We all know this.

So large electrical device with zero water protection directly over a tank of H20!

You may not intend for the two to mix but the potential is there.

Also water vapour from the heated tank below is likely to condense inside the TV above, it may do nothing more than shorten the life span of your TV but it may well go bang one day when you turn it on.

I wouldn't take the risk, keep well apart.

Maybe a stupid question by me then! :P

Im gutted I dont really have much desk space but would really like one. Parents done want it anywhere else in the house.

The only other option is to move the Tv onto the wall, move my PC to the other side of my desk and put the tank where the PC is, that means that the tank would be 50/50 in direct window contact....

Could that be solved in any way?

Any chance you might be moving in to your own place some time soon?

Sorry if that sounds rude, not my intention just that once you do move out and have some space of your own you'll soon think your 54 litre tank too small and be looking for something biggger!

If so save yourself the aggrevation and cost and get yourself some fish once you've got your own place and space to keep them.

Just a thought.
